I have a large file application that worked well in VB6.... thinking of replacing .... what do you recommend.....j ava?, c++, or ruby or ????? very open to suggestions

Go with what are you most comfortable with.
Also, may want to take into consideration Why you want to switch and make sure that the new technology does have the same problem.
And you should probably take into consideration the type of application you are hoping to move towards...if you are creating a web application, then pick a web technology...if not...then don't pick a web technology.
Really it comes down to what you are most comfortable with and making sure the new technology meets your application's requirements.
