    Performance issues

    Hi,

    I have a VB6.0 application accessing MS Access 97 via Microsoft Jet
    OLEDB 4.0.

    Everything works fine from a computer running Windows XP with an Intel
    processor with 256 mg of memory but it comes to a crawl from a
    computer running Windows 98 Second Edition with an AMD processor and
    the same amount of memory....

    Do I need to replace the CPU or the operating system?

      before you go investing in hardware, check the MDAC version on the Win 98
      system, and also check for any spot patches to make sure you have the
      latest Win 98 fixes ( Its Win 98, 2nd Edition, yes ? )

      And, be aware that Win 98 is known to be very picky about the hardware it
      runs on. I've had the same copy of Win 98 run like a slug on one box, and
      like a scalded cat on another. Its THE most picky version of Windows that
      I've ever dealt with.

      If you have to revisit your hardware/software, dump win 98 and go with XP,
      or even a copy of Win 4.0 Workstation ( mine is Rock solid and happy as a
      puppy on and AMD 1.4 gig processor ).

      Windows ME is pretty much 98 with a face lift. I like it, but its only a
      bit less picky about hardware than Win 98 is.


      Oh, one last thought, AMD processor have been suffering from a bit with
      getting a reputation for being less than fully compatible with Windows ( as
      compared to Intel chips ). In my opinion, having used several Intel and
      several AMD machines, the issue is not the CPU, its the motherboards. I
      dont know if AMD is perhaps not being agressive enough about managing the
      suppliers of motherboards, but I have gone through 2 bad motherboards on my
      AMD boxes and the CPU's just keep on ticking.

      Alas, I am forced to give up on the AMD solution untill I know that this is
      resolved. Not such a loss. CPU capacities are so high now compared to IO
      and memory, this is hardly a setback.
