I would say it is Windows.

Windows has got excellent features on GUI which is very easy/efficient for a portable computer. Moreover, windows is meant for Personal/Portable computers.

LINUX and its flavours are known for servers/workstations where high performance and availability is needed.

You can run many flavor of Linux straight from a DVD, no installation required. See by yourself.

that's quite true - you might simply try linux from a so called 'Live CD' ... todays distros will work quite well out of the box and give you nearly the same features for a 'personal computer' like windows does - even the gui is quite advanced today - where KDE or GNOME are certainly the simplest window managers (GUI) that you might use when you want to switch from windows to linux. what would be possible with unix-like operating systems is simply shown with apple's mac OSX - where the mentioned UI features certainly beat all windows features - in appearance and even in the basic design and usability.

in my personal opinion - the main difference today between linux and windows is the lack of the newest and modern games/hardware drivers (which depends on the nature of linux as an open source platform) for linux - when this wouldn't be an issue - then i personally prefer linux and using it for years now i never would regret that :) ... but windows is certainly a quite good OS - and of course - it supports a wide range of hardware etc. - which means that it sometimes could be a pain to get linux run on some 'exotic' hardware :) ... but as i said ... i'm using it for a long time now (besides OSX) and did a lot of installs (mainly Ubuntu) which really made very little problems since more then 3 years ...

I think the most important question is: What do you want to do with this portable computer? You can't say that one System is generally better than the other (or at least you shouldn't), because they both focus on different applications and user groups.

If you want to play games, you're probably better of with Windows. If you want to develop applications, Linux may be the right choice for you (though this depends on the application of course). If you want to do administrative work, dito. If you want to do a lot of graphical stuff, Windows may be right. I could continue with the list, but I think you get the point.

So, if you tell us what you want to do, we may be able to help you choosing. :-)

          Greetings,
          Nepomuk

If you have to ask the question then Window is better for you. If you want to learn how computers work, program and aren't afraid to get into tweaking things, then any *nix/BSD will run rings around anything Windows could ever hope to do.
