    Java slowing down Computer.

I am using a Win XP Home system and I have had a problem ever since I
first bought it. Whenever I am on the net and come on to a web site that
has a Jaava enabled website, my system slows down terribly. It will
initially freeze for a few seconds and then when I am atempting to navigate
    the website, it takes forever.
Is there something I can do to stop this from happening?

    thanks
    John T McD.

Get a copy of Mozilla. If that doesn't work, get a copy of Linux.

I'm using Windows XP Professional and do not experience this problem. Alex
PS Could it be related to the amount of stuff needs to be downloaded from
      the site?
Do you use a 56kbps modem or a highband conexion?

It sound like you don't have enough RAM and/or CPU speed. The JVM is a
very heavy process and needs oodles of RAM. If you are teetering on not
having enough RAM, the JVM could push you over and cause lots of
swapping on your system. Does you disk churn a lot when you load Java?

          Well, I am using a P4 1.5Ghz Gateway system with 640meg of 133Mhz RAM.
I have a master drive of 20gig and a 100gig slave drive. I am connected
through Verizon DSL but I was using the High Speed Roadrunner Cable system
prior and it still had the same problem. I bought the Gateway system back
in 2001 just prior to the release of XP. I think I was using XP Home about
2 months before the official release since it came preinstalled. I have all
the most recent updates from Windows. I didn't notice any significant
slowdowns when I installed SP1 like so many others did.
The problem just seems to happen only when the JVM symbol appears down in
the bottom right hand corner of my screen and it is running a java app via
the internet. I use all the major Browsers except Opera.I even still use
NS4.7 sometimes but rarely IE6. I use Mozilla 1.4 currently but I've been
using Mozilla for a couple of years now, ever since the original Betas came
          around.
Are there any settings in my system I should look at that might help? I
let the system sutomatically select the pageing file and things like that.
I keep my system pretty clean, I have alot of programs on it but not alot
running at the same time. I keep my hard drive defragged once they get
beyond 5%. I don't use a partition on the 100gig drive but I was having
this problem before I installed that drive on the system so I ruled that
          out.
That's about all I can think of at this moment. If you have any other
suggestions of questions ask. I appreciate the input more than you know.

          Thanks tons
          John T McD.

Your system looks fine HW-wise so I would go next and suggest you should go
back and try IE6 again. Java is a complicated beast and perhaps Mozilla
didn't keep up as well as IE. (so if it's not the HW it must be the SW...!).

I don't know why, but Win XP doesn't seem to like Java very much. I
know that whenever I do any custom double buffering the slowdown is
              rediculuous.

                Re: Java slowing down Computer.

                hello there
you missed to specify which version of JRE you are running ?
XP(MS) has serious problems with JAVA (sun to be more spcific ;)) ....
when i first installed XP pro .... my IE would prompt me to download
MS JVM every time (i mean it EVERY TIME) when an applet is visited
(that was REAL BAD PAINFUL DISGUSTING) some dialog box used to appear
saying "download MS JVM < 1 min required" & it sucked (in those days i
guess there was some fight between MS & SUN regarding JVM WELL IM NOT
SURE ABOUT THIS THOUGH could be just a rumour).
i would suggest you to download latest version of JRE (or any version)
                from SUN's site .....
in fact when i unistalled jre1.4.1_02 it left some of the entries in
registry as it is & i really had trouble UNINSTALLING jre ..... i had
to use those registry cleaner programs
after that i installed JRE 1.4.2 & now my IE doesnot support applets
                anymore
God knows why (im sure even ppl at MS dont know the reason ;) )
i simply switched back to Netscape 7.1 better n faster

                regards
                amey
