This consists of an analysis of the conventions and controversy caused by this branch of cinema. In addition, it will read into the portrayal of females within popular media and the resulting success of the male gaze. This paper aims to question the identity of the spectator and what qualifies one to partake in the gaze.
Following sections constitute two separate analysis‟, one for Carpenter‟s innovative slasher-hit Halloween (1978) and the other for Cunningham‟s Friday the 13th (1980) both of which shocked audiences worldwide.
Textual sources used to support these arguments vary from Clover‟s (1993) Men, Women, and Chain Saws: Gender in Modern Horror Film to Women, Feminist Identity and Society in the 1980s: Selected Papers by Zavala (1985). Notably, the work of famed gender theorist, Laura Mulvey (1996) supports a comprehensive evaluation of gender within new- age cinema.
