Gendered Bodies. Feminist Approaches to Spatial Design

Athens Journal of Architecture, 2024
Collective and cooperative living; a free, nonhierarchical space to express their individuality. ... more Collective and cooperative living; a free, nonhierarchical space to express their individuality. These are some of the characters that emerged in feminist and women-centred utopias. La cité des dames by C. de Pizan (1405) and Herland by C. Perkins Gilman (1915) are two literary texts that, far in space and time, reflect on the modes of inhabiting spaces, in a fictional way, through the construction of an ideal milieu. Charged with a transformational power that allows them to go beyond a mere narration and become space, they constitute a tool for these women to critique the hierarchical living which reproduced (and still reproduces) gender roles. However, "What Would a Non-Sexist City Be Like?" through this question, Dolores Hayden condensed the lessons learnt from several built experiences of collective and collaborative housing that aimed at freeing women going from an androcentric to a gendered city. This contribution becomes part of the discussion about the spatialization-or translation-of gender equality into spaces and architectures by focusing specifically on women's collective living at different scales: the building, the block/complex, and the neighbourhood. These projects will be presented focusing on the role of architecture becoming a form of emancipation for women.

The contribution exam-ines Yasmeen Lari’s architectural work showing a humanitarian and socially responsible attitude. The focus is a critical re-reading of her architecture and activities through a gender lens, focusing on the role of women in this process.

The project assumes the new European Bauhaus as a framework, reflecting upon the spatialization of theoretical instances aimed at the physical impacts of a co-evolutionary transformation. The output of the research is the promotion of design actions for a resilient landscape prototype, linking productive activities to natural and social capital, through circular and Nature-based solutions. Thus, attention is given to spatial configurations that aim to increase biodiversity in human settlement, through the design of ecological corridors, and to inclusiveness, in the redesign of former industrial facilities and local community habitats.

By adopting a feminist perspective, the project challenges the notion of a neutral user and seeks to design spaces that consider the needs of marginalized groups. The study focuses on the project "Making Space in Dalston" by muf architecture/art, which emphasizes collectivity, alterity, and performativity in the design process. The in-between spaces are seen as complex, relational realms that bind the city together and offer opportunities for emancipation and recognition. The paper highlights the significance of living bodies in spatial narratives and emphasizes the temporal aspects of design. This research contributes to the ongoing debate on feminist perspectives in contemporary design and advocates for more inclusive and equitable cities. Arianna Scaioli Architect, PhD Candidate in Architectural Urban and Interior Design at Polytechnic of Milan, DAStU (2021), has been a visiting researcher at Brookfield Sustainability Institute, CA (2023). Her research deals with gender-sensitive approach as a design tool focusing on transition spaces between the domestic and public domains.

However, the circular economy opens up new operational frontiers beyond the scale of the construction detail. It embraces more complex social and cultural fields that ultimately question the changing relationship between man and inhabited space. The article assumes this perspective and examines the possible implications of circular logics’ spatial organizations at larger scales that have a great impact on settlement forms, proposing a critical comparison between two case studies characterized by two built fabrics with different densities. The first one is the regeneration of the Ilot de l’Arc de Triomphe district (high density and compactness),...

Abstract
The design of the contemporary public space can include the new needs of society, incorporating the values of the current era. The contribution aims to present the possibility of a transversal approach, in which the ideals of an ecological and fair society are integrated into space and in its
design phases.
This method is revealed through the use of nature-based solutions and gender-sensitive approach, applied within urban regeneration processes of marginal areas, considered fertile contexts, in which there is an overlap of environmental problems linked to climate change and gender inequalities. The article will display the application of the aforementioned strategies through the presentation of two case studies, in which the project is not subordinated to the production of the form but rather intertwines ethical and aesthetic values in the construction of common space.

The two design experiences ensure a second life to inhabited artifacts and soils.

Abstract
The contemporary urban model, globally spread and characterized by a high housing density, from different perspectives is considered more “sustainable”, and therefore to be pursued, compared to an extensive development connected to low-density urban development ideologies. Indeed, phenomena such as urban sprawl become degenerations of an urban model that cannot be controlled and defined as a whole. High density avoids excessive soil consumption, minimizing the use of the car for travelling, and, consequently, the reduction in the emission of polluting substances. However, the health emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the shortcomings of a high-density settlement morphology. Since social distancing has become part of everyday life, following the health emergency, the most detectable effects are social. On the one hand, if the traditional urban convivial spaces are deserted (going towards an almost total cancellation of physical social relationships) on the other hand we are witnessing a multiplication and explosion of types of urban sociality, developed through new forms of expression and use of spaces. Therefore, this contingent situation offers the possibility to reflect on the role and importance of all those often forgotten spaces. Indeed, they have returned taking a key role within our quarantined lives: balconies, terraces, roofs, landings. Hanging spaces have become elements of sociality, bringing into dialogue a living microcosm with an external macrocosm, currently extraneous and detached. The paper intends to survey projects of the international architectural panorama that have been able to interpret these spaces with a new social vision. This vision does not lead to the oblivion of these relationships’ physical and spatial dimension but compares them with the new instances, and even emergencies, of the city of the future.
