Princess Nora University, Designs and arts, Member of the Ethnography Lab; Member of the Organizing Committee of the International Summer School Dear Dr Khosravi, My name is Katerina Rozakou and I am a social anthropologist specialized on NGOs, civil society and migration, currently located in Greece. I am member of the Organizing Committee for the International Summer School on "Cultures, Migrations and Borders" co-organized by the University of the Aegean (Lesvos, Greece) and the University of Amsterdam. The Summer School will take place on the island of Lesvos for the second year this July 2013. Both myself and my colleagues organizing this year's Summer School are aware of your work on borders and migration and strongly believe that your participation in a public event we are organizing will be an invaluable and creative contribution to our School. Especially your book " 'Illegal' Traveler" is a rich ethnographic account of border-crossing that brings to the fore the experience of the people involved and thus goes beyond generalized and disempowering accounts of migration. Our perspective of anthropology (and, also, anthropology as praxis) is very similar to the one outlined in your book. We will be delighted if you could be part of this year's Summer School. Of course the details of your participation will be later discussed. [A few details on the Summer School follow. I apologize for the long e-mail] Last year our Summer School included scholars-lecturers from 7 Universities and approximately 30 students (at post-graduate and doctoral levels) from more than a dozen different countries and universities. The School was a great success as the evaluation indicates. This was also the general feeling of both lecturers and students. Our Summer School is committed to promoting the understanding of borders and migration through an emphasis on a microscopic, ethnographic lens. For this purpose, apart from lectures, an essential part of last year's Summer School were field trips specifically designed to introduce our students to life at the border (visits to an former detention center, to a shelter for minor asylum seekers, a trip across the Greek-Turkish border etc). This year we are organizing an event that will be open to the general public of the community of Plomari that hosts our Summer School. Our aim is to further include the local community to the activities of our Summer School but primarily to actively promote cross-cultural understanding and the acceptance of difference. For this purpose we have decided to invite leading scholars in the study of migrations and border-crossing to participate in the event]. All the best Katerina Rozakou University of the Aegean International Summer School "Cultures, Migrations, Borders" Lesvos, Greece For more information about last year's Summer School "Cultures, Migrations, "
