I am an architectural history and heritage practioner interested in the everyday spaces and places that enabled nation building and colonial expansion within the British Isles and British Empire. I also write on the theory of settlement and dwelling. Books include Building the British Atlantic World (UNC Press 2016) and two forthcoming monographs with Oxford University Press, 'Inns, Nation, Empire' and Eighteenth-century Architectures.
I am programme lead for the MA Heritage programme at the University of Plymouth, England, where I am able to draw on my background with Historic Environment Scotland.
I am also Director of Plymouth Heritage Praxis Consulting, working with historic sites, museums, heritage bodies and national/local government.

The Highland House Transformed examines the domestic architecture of the Scottish Highlands and B... more The Highland House Transformed examines the domestic architecture of the Scottish Highlands and British Canada, exploring the distinct character of the houses and villages of the Highlands, their architectural sameness, and how they relate to a history of clearance and emigration. In the Highlands and Islands the construction of hundreds of new farmhouses, cottages and planned villages throughout the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was a key element in a revolutionary process of agricultural improvement that permanently transformed the landscape. Agricultural improvement initiated the mass clearances of thousands of traditional settlements, replaced by a Highland building boom of new 'modern' houses. These were designed to demonstrate that a new Scottish Highlands, improving and prosperous, had emerged out of the political turmoil of the mid-eighteenth century to take its place within the wider economy and consumer society of early modern Britain. In Canada Highland settlers built new, modern houses that imitated the comfortable colonial lives of the New England Loyalist neighbours.

This paper considers the significance of the spaces and material culture of the ‘principal inn’ a... more This paper considers the significance of the spaces and material culture of the ‘principal inn’ as the centre of a distinct world of elite mobility in eighteenth-century Britain. Inns were central to the expansion and improvement of the travel network that brought the British Isles closer together through the long eighteenth century. The turnpike system introduced improved surfaces to old and new roads while new coach-building technology allowed faster movement on those roads. However, it was the national network of inns, regularly and reliably punctuating Britain's roads, that made fast and efficient travel a practical, everyday reality from London to York, Bristol to Holyhead, Edinburgh to Inverness. On arrival the inn provided food and accommodation for travellers, hay and stables for horses and grease for carriage axles. The principal inn was the all-purpose venue for the sociable activities of polite society: from dining, drinking and conversing with friends to business deals, meetings of club and societies, legal proceedings, military musters, civic and religious proceedings. Through their central location, carefully designed interior spaces and refined material culture of furniture, fixtures and fittings, principal inns were key sites in the elite control of urban space, the enforcement of social hierarchies and the reinforcement of social values.

Habitations of the Labourer by the English architect John Wood the Younger was the fi rst archite... more Habitations of the Labourer by the English architect John Wood the Younger was the fi rst architectural treatise and pattern book to address the dwelling of the rural labourer: the cottage. Wood combined the order and regularity of neoclassical design with a programme of humanitarian reform, centred upon material and structural standards, within the context of agricultural improvement and Britain’s nascent rural capital economy: a regular improved cottage for a regulated improved landscape. Wood’s rational approach to social reform and cottage design distinguishes the cottages described in Habitations of the Labourer from the irregular vernacular dwellings, material decay and rural poverty presented in the picturesque- cottage pattern books that dominated the late-Georgian architectural press .

The British Fisheries Society, founded in 1786, was a semi-charitable joint stock com pany, simi... more The British Fisheries Society, founded in 1786, was a semi-charitable joint stock com pany, similar to other improvement trusts of the period established to fund the construction of roads, bridges, canals and hospitals. The Society was however unique in the breadth of its ambition to create a chain of complete settlements or villages the length of the northern Scottish coastline from Dornoch on the east to Oban on the west. These new settlements were intended to be fishing stations focussed on the perceived wealth to be gained from the herring fishery. Four settlements were established at Ullapool, Wester Ross, Tobermory, Mull, Lochbay, Skye and Pulteneytown, Wick, Caithness and the specific intention of this thesis has been to examine those four built environments created by the Society. Decades of scholarship on the early modern Atlantic has painted a picture of a world filled with ... more Decades of scholarship on the early modern Atlantic has painted a picture of a world filled with a diverse array of littoral cultures. 1 As imperial and indigenous populations interacted, Europeans, Americans, and Africans engaged in exchanges, transformations, and ruptures that produced hybrid cultures and revolutionary societies. In Building the British Atlantic World: Spaces, Places, and Material Culture, 1600-1850, editors Daniel Maudlin and Bernard L. Herman seek to identify cultural commonalities and continuities that marked British identity during this time of significant change. They turn to the built environment to do so. This paper is an historical and architectural case-study of the remaining Argyll tacksmen's h... more This paper is an historical and architectural case-study of the remaining Argyll tacksmen's houses in Morvern, built during the first phase of agricultural Improvement between 1754 and 1819. It is argued that this group of buildings represents the last phase of clan warfare in the region, built by tacksmen acting as colonizing agents of Campbell control and polity over relatively recently acquired MacLean territory.
