Death Guard vs Tyranids (1,000 points) – Battle Report

List Theory

So, here we go, this was my last game of 9th Edition and was played just before the release of 10th. I’m still just watching 10th from the sidelines, for various reasons that I might go into at some point, and haven’t yet played a game of it. So this was my most recent game of 40k, will it be my last? Who knows.

Anyway.

I wanted to use some things that I just liked or hadn’t used very much. So the Bubonic Bong went into the list, I’d used it once and bungled it badly, could I do any better with it second time around? I also took a full squad of Cultists. I was worried about what would happen if my opponent had any blast weapons, but this game was about fun and not winning so into the list they went. My “wrong trousers” Helbrute had to make an appearance, it was played as being equipped with two fists, I always got the feeling that Wallace could be a bit “handsy”. This was backed up with another identically equipped magnetised Helbrute. Finally we had a Chaos Spawn, Typhus, Deathshroud bodyguards and Lord Sassy Nurgling was in charge.

Did I have a plan? Nope. I just wanted to see all of this stuff on the table.

The Game

Setup

We rolled the Display of Spiritual Might mission from the Arks of Omen book. This gives us points for not only holding the objectives but also for killing enemy units, it’s going to be a killy game…

We both deploy pretty far forwards, both having melee heavy armies, and the the Tyranids will start things off.

Death Guard vs Space Wolves (1,000 points) – Battle Report

List Theory

When I played this game the Index for Death Guard in 10th Edition had been published, and Possessed hadbeen removed. I enjoyed working on my first squad of Death Guard Possessed, so much so that I made another batch. Therefore this list had to have Possessed in it. But what else? I’m still very much unsure about 10th, so I wanted to use things that I haven’t used much and also some things that I view as being very “Death Guard”.

So I added in the Plague Surgeon, I painted him back in 2021 and I don’t believe that I’ve ever used him on the table. He buffs infantry, he can heal models and also hands out a 6+ ability to ignore any lost wounds. He should work best with models that have a lot of wounds to lose, so I’ll put him with Typhus and his Deathshroud body guard.

I’ve played the Biologus Putrifier a few times but I don’t think I’ve ever really used his ability to infuse melee weapons and allow them to hand out mortal wounds on wound rolls of 6. The Possessed can do a lot of attacks, and a full blob of them would work really well with that ability. I give him the Arch Contaminator Warlord Trait so as to let me re-roll those wound rolls and go fishing for those 6s.

What else defines the Death Guard to me? Poxwalkers! I was aware that I had a very melee heavy army and so wanted some shooting, so after taking a couple of Myphitic Blight Haulers I then take as many Poxwalkers as I can.

The Game

Setup

We rolled the Surge of Faith mission from the Arks of Omen book. This has a special action that gives you extra points if you perform it. I’ve a low unit count army and my Poxwalkers can’t do actions other than Spread the Sickeness. I’m not going to be doing any other actions.

I chose the following secondary objectives:

  • Spread the Sickness: My Poxwalkers can do this, and nothing else.
  • Assassination: Tee enemy have three characters, one of whom is a Warlord. I know that they’re a melee army and are going to be coming for me, I have to kill them anyway, I might as well get points for it.
  • Grind them Down: The enemy have a fair few units, and I hope my melee units can chew through some of them, lets give it a go.

We both deploy with our melee units far forwards and some stuff hiding in cover, the Space Wolves put some of their Terminators into deep strike.

The Space Wolves would take the first turn.
