Death Guard vs Astra Militarum (1,000 points) – Battle Report

List Theory

It’s another Terminus Est Assault Force list! Compared to my last game I dropped the two units of Possessed and took two units of Plague Marines instead. They are slower but now that heavy weapons are free upgrades they do offer the list, which is otherwise very melee focussed, some ranged attacks.

I knew that this was going to be my second Tempest of War game and I was worried that I might not have enough fast moving units to react to the random secondary objectives, but I also wanted to see how this could perform.

The Game

Setup

The smaller table size and the deployment map gave us some very small deployment zones. The Astra Militarum had a jet that wouldn’t fit into the deployment zone without overhanging the table, it had to go into reserves.

I put one unit of Plague Marines over on the left but other than that everything jammed into the right hand side. There were three objectives there and I wanted to try and grab them. However this sets up a shooting gallery from the other side of the table from which I had no cover or line of sight obstructions.

The Astra Militarum would take the first turn.

Death Guard vs Necrons (1,000 points) – Battle Report

List Theory

I keep saying that I’m going to give up on playing the Terminus Est Assault Force and go back to playing with Daemon Engines and Vehicles but I keep on doing it. I had a week to prepare for this game but just didn’t get around to it, and this would be my first game since the points changes came out. So, rather than switch a lot around I kept pretty much the same list and tinkered with it.

Despite this I did manage to build an illegal list… I took a Plague Marine with a Plasma Gun and another with a Meltagun, and that’s no an option. Curses… I think the Meltagun fired once and the Plasma Gun blew itself up the first time it fired, so I don’t think it made a massive difference. But I must be more careful.

I went with three small squads of Poxwalkers as I think that buys me flexibility and also keeps the CP costs down if I resurrect them.

The Game

Setup

Because I’m awesome and brought the wrong book we played a mission out of the Grand Tournament 2021 mission pack. This has a mission specific rule that you can get one extra CP per turn if you hold an objective in your enemy’s deployment zone. So this could be quite an aggressive game.

I thought about my objectives a bit more in this game. Behind Enemy Lines has, of late, been very difficult for me to score. I’m just not quick enough and my opponents see my deep strikes lurking and block me quite effectively. So I took Stranglehold instead, I should be able to hold objectives. Spread the Sickness was a regular choice, I’ve a lot of Poxwalkers who can do this. Stranglehold is something I’ve been considering and I’ve seen it used well against me, so it’s worth a go. No Prisoners would give me points each time I killed things, which given the Necron habit of standing back up again seemed clever, I could score multiple times for the same model.

The Necrons would take the first turn.

Death Guard vs Tau (1,000 points) – Battle Report

This was a game that I played over a month ago, it’s taken a while to get around to writing it up as I’ve been going through a bit of a 40k hobby slump and distracted myself by running some RPG Sessions instead. Given how long ago I played this this write up will be shorter than usual.

The Game

Setup

This was the Cleanse the Land mission from the War Zone Nachmund book.

Battle Round 1

The Tau have the first turn and all of a sudden they are all over the table. This is a combination of special rules for some units, stratagems and Mont’Ka. I was really surprised how quickly they could take control of the table. The player really knew his stuff, had his movement planned and it was most impressive.

My Death Guard were immediately caught on the hop. I did manage to kill more of the enemy this round but I was badly positioned and a number of important charges failed.
