Death Guard vs Iron Hands (1,500 points) – Battle Report

List Theory

More Plague Marines were still in progress when I played this game so they weren’t ready for the table. However I did decide to paint a unit of Spindle Drones in an evening to fill out this list. They’re only 35 points and that filled the exact hole in my list. In some ways they’re not as good as Nurglings (no deep strike, a lower Toughness and fewer Wounds) but they do have OC1 and so can take objectives, which is something that Nurglings cannot do.

So my plan was to keep the two units of Nurglings that I did have in reserve ready to deep strike to grab secondary objectives and to use the Spindle Drones to help me capture objectives early on. The rest of my army could then catch up and the Drones could drift off seeing what else they could achieve.

A unit in an evening.

I have been busy dabbling with other games, but there has been some 40k things going on.

One of those things has been me trying to paint a unit in an evening. I had a game planned for the next evening and I had a few points free in my list. It realised that a unit of Spindle Drones, from Blackstone Fortress, could fit in as they’re only 35 points and have the <Unaligned Forces> Faction Keyword. That keyword lets me take them in my army. They’re cheaper than a group of Nurglings and can take objectives due to having OC1. So there are some advantages to these little chaps.

But I don’t play unpainted models, and the ones I had were just bare plastic. So a challenge was born… The steps I had to do were.

  1. Glue sand to the base.
  2. Seal sand with thinned PVA glue.
  3. Spray with white undercoat.
  4. Paint the drones black.
  5. Drybrush with Thunderhawk Blue and then Chronus Blue.
  6. Paint the green “eye”, wash it and highlight it.
  7. Paint the base grey, wash it and highlight it.
  8. Varnish the models.
  9. Paint the rim black.

Oh boy, but I got it done! I started at about 8pm and was done by midnight, my fastest miniatures ever 🙂

Death Guard vs World Eaters (1,000 points) – Battle Report

List Theory

The list that I’ve played for my last few games was tweaked again to fit into 1,000 points (I promise that more Plague Marines are coming, but they’re still not ready yet).

I planned to use my Cultists to run into the midfield early and to grab objectives or act as screening for the rest of my army. The rest of my army would hustle forward as a blob and try to bully their way through the enemy army at a time of my choosing.

My First 40k Tournament – Battle Reports

List Theory

This was a team event, teams had two players each of whom would bring a 650 point list. Given that this was my first event I didn’t want anything that I didn’t know how to handle, I also didn’t want too many parts to it. So I looked back on my previous games and kind of boiled out some elements that I thought would be fun.

Mortarion can be a powerful model on the table, and he’ll certainly demand my opponent’s attention. I pair him a a Foetid Bloat Drone to give me some mobility, that I suspect will die quite quickly. Then I wanted something that could hold objectives, so Typhus and a mob of Poxwalkers felt good. I love Zombies too, so this would be nice for me to see on the table.

Finally I added some Nurglings for objective shenanigans, I can deep strike them all over the place and try and score some missions.

I was paired with a Drukhari player who had a fast mobile army, that was good, it helps to fill out the gaps in my somewhat slow and plodding force.

I also gave my list a name, it’s Typhus and Mortarion, and no one likes Typhus, so it’s Dick and Morty….

Death Guard vs Astra Militarum (1,500 points) – Battle Report

List Theory

It’s the same list again! I still haven’t got around to really understanding the Plague Marine options and I feel that I want more model options, so I’m sticking with this list for now. To be fair it does give me a chance to try it against someone else, it’s on three wins at this point.

Death Guard vs Adeptus Custodes (1,500 points) – Battle Report

List Theory

Again I was lazy and used the same army list that I’ve used for my other games of 2024 (Tyranids and Grey Knights). I still want to shift to Plague Marines, but that still needs some rules contemplation and I’ve concerned that I don’t have enough heavy weapons options constructed, I might buy some more Plague Marines. There was also a serious note in that I could try this army out against a different army to see how it did. Honest. And I was busy before the game.

Death Guard vs Grey Knights (1,500 points) – Battle Report

List Theory

I was really lazy for this game, well with some thought backing that up. The list I used in my last game against the Tyranids seemed to be reasonably good so I thought that I would try it again. But I’m also aware that I need to give my Plague Marines another chance on the table, but to do that I need to contemplate the buffing characters, so that can wait a bit.

Death Guard vs Tyranids (1,500 points) – Battle Report

List Theory

I enjoyed my last game and felt that the list was working reasonably well, but that it had some fat that could be trimmed.

The Helbrute was dropped as I don’t think that it gave me much, my plan of using it to infect things didn’t really make much difference when it seemed that by the second round I was infecting stuff anyway. I also came to the bizarre conclusion that I had too many Nurglings.

So those things were dropped out of the list, which gave me a few more points. I took a unit of Cultists, my plan for them being that I could use their scout move to move towards the centre of the table and grab stuff or that I could hold them back to perform actions in my deployment zone. I also took a fast moving Bloat Drone equipped with the lawnmower to act as an additional threat and a distraction from Mortarion.

Death Guard vs Adeptus Custodes (1,500 points) – Battle Report

List Theory

This would be my second game using 10th’s Leviathan Mission cards and it would be slightly bigger than my last at 1,500 points. Mortarion seemed to be working nicely in 10th and I wanted to get all my Plagueburst Crawlers onto the table, and that’s a big chunk from my list gone. I also wanted to bring the Helbrute back to see if he could tag enemy units with the Death Guard’s contagions. Typhus was almost an after thought for my list, and he was accompanied by only a small unit of 10 Poxwalkers. I think this was was, as I will return to, a mistake. The Lord of Virulence with some Deathshroud seems like a solid choice, and then it was a case of taking as many Nurselings as I could.

Death Guard vs Genestealer Cult (1,000 points) – Battle Report

List Theory

This would be my first game using 10th’s Leviathan Mission cards, therefore I didn’t want my list to be too complex. I’ve already used Nurglings, Plagueburst Crawlers, the Lord of Virulence, Deathshroud and the Cultists. I added in Mortarion to see how he fared in 10th Edition.
