welcome to my website

about:

hello, i'm jacob (ヤコブ) or kev (ケブ), the webmaster of this website you just stumbled across. i hope you enjoy some of my photos. here are some informations about me: i'm 26-years old and my pronouns are he/him. for me, it's currently loading.... besides photography, i also enjoy editing videos -- and yep, despite how this site looks, i do have a bachelor's degree in computer science: umweltinformatik (environmental informatics).

i always wanted to build my own website, but procrastination got the better of me. i wanted the site to also serve a purpose, and until 2024, i didn't have one. that's why i dedicated this site (mainly) to my then newfound hobby: photography. on top of that, i'm using this site as a playground to test things i've learned during my studies so i don't forget everything, haha.
so, welcome to my little corner of the world wide web, where pixels meet purpose!

i'm the proud owner of two (well, technically three) cameras -- though the third one i haven't used yet.

my main cameras are a canon 6d (my trusty dslr for my travels) and a shanghai 58-2 rangefinder, which i carry around most days because she's small and fits easily in my pocket. and then there is the praktica mtl 3, it has been sitting half-disassembled on my desk ever since i started trying to repair it by myself.

at the moment, i'm also eyeing the canon canonet ql17 giii -- it's an even smaller camera with a wider 40mm faster f/1.7 aperture lens attached to it, and it's not as expensive as the shanghai; so it would be a better camera to carry daily.

my lenses:

ef 24-105mm f/4 l is usm
my all-rounder lens, great for landscapes and street photography.
ef 50mm f/1.8 stm
my go-to lens when i want something light and autofocus.
ef 300mm f/4 l is usm
my new lens for wildlife (and possibly sports, eventually).
ltm shanghai 50mm f/3.5
the cute little lens that came with my shanghai 58-2.
m42 carl zeiss jena flektogon 35mm f/2.4
my favorite lens, its great for landscapes and close-ups.
m42 kmz helios 44-2
the lens has a beautiful bokeh with a lot of character. too bad i can't focus to infinity without hitting the mirror...
m42 pentacon electric f/1.8
my first vintage lens -- cheap, yet surprisingly sharp.
ltm canon serenar 50mm f/1.9
my second ltm lens, also collapsible, but with a much larger maximum aperture.

above, you'll find my small but growing collection of lenses. i currently own eight lenses across three different mounts: canon ef, m42, and ltm. all of them -- except for the ltm lenses -- can be mounted on my canon 6d. click on any lens to learn a bit more about it.

explore the places i've been with openstreetmap:

to view the map, pixelgallery.net must connect to openstreetmap.org servers to load the necessary map tiles. this connection will not be established until you click 'ok.' by clicking 'ok,' you consent to the transmission of data, including your ip address, to the openstreetmap.org servers.

above, you'll find a map featuring some of the photos i've taken during my travels. my goal is to have at least one pin on every continent someday!
to reach that goal, i'll try to keep the map updated. it's not necessarily difficult, but it's definitely time-consuming. tweaking the json file, pinpointing the exact location for each picture -- especially when adding pins months later -- can be tricky. the built-in gps in the 6d, when it works, only gives an estimate, so i often have to fine-tune the location afterward.

shoutouts:
big thanks to w3schools, stackoverflow, stackfindover, and my good friend nauti -- whom i can always turn to when i have questions about javascript, php, or anything programming-related, really! (unlike me, he studies pure computer science and can actually code properly -- whereas i, as an environmental informatics student, only ever covered applied computer science and can really only pull off basic scripting, haha.)
what i'm trying to say here is that without their services or nauti, i wouldn't have been able to design the site the way i wanted, which -- although designed responsively for the mobile web nowadays -- is intended to be viewed on an hd monitor.

updates:
-> in 2024-12, the site got a complete overhaul. while it might not look all that different from when i first created it nearly a year ago, the frontend is now much more organized. big thanks to jquery and bootstrap for making many aspects easier to manage. i had never used these tools before, but they've been incredibly helpful for formatting and scripting, respectively.
-> the site got another major overhaul in 2026-02. i had two reasons for that: first, loading any page took at least two seconds, and second, because nauti kept making fun of me for using way too much javascript (there were 27 js files on the server at the time) for doing static things that really should've been handled by php. most tasks that used to rely on javascript are now handled server-side with php, making the site more friendly to older systems. thanks, rasmus lerdorf.
