About Us
We hope this website will inform you of PIT initiatives on campus, ways you can get involved, and how you can be a better advocate for ensuring technology serves the public interest.
Technology has reshaped fundamental aspects of society—from how we vote and consume news to how we communicate with each other. Yet these transformative changes have largely happened without meaningful public input. Instead, a handful of powerful companies and institutions control how technology operates in our lives, creating widespread concerns about privacy, safety, and democratic participation.
These broader societal questions are now reaching Stanford’s campus. Students, faculty, and staff are increasingly examining our role and responsibility in shaping technology’s impact. This reflection has sparked new research projects and student organizations dedicated to addressing these complex challenges.
As a founding member of the Public Interest Technology University Network, Stanford is helping lead efforts to ensure technology serves the common good. Public Interest Technology encompasses innovations that strengthen communities, make government more responsive to citizens, and improve outcomes for people affected by the tech industry’s growth.
