Its essays are concerned with works and topics relevant to the founding phase of post-colonial literatures, the origins of specific literary genres, and their later development. The post-colonial authors examined here include Janet Frame, Mudrooroo, Derek Walcott, Patrick White and Zoë Wicomb, amongst others, while the closing section is dedicated to Lady Gregory’s pioneering role in the Celtic Revival.

The Proceedings of the international conference Cultural Crossings: the Case Studies of Canada an... more The Proceedings of the international conference Cultural Crossings: the Case Studies of Canada and Italy initiate Diagosfera's section dedicated to literary criticism. The essays contained in the volume fit in the work programme delineated by the series, which aims to publish texts that allow readers and scholars to cross cultural and linguistic boundaries. By contributing to the tradition of Canadian Studies in Italy, the volume explores disciplinary practices and conventions within the poetical and political dimension of writing about and among cultures. The essays collected in this volume focus on different meaning systems, ranging from the analysis of cultural "texts", to the interpretation of literary works focused on the relationship between memory and identity. Emphasis is also paid to the Canadian foreign policy, to linguistic diversity, to education and to the relationship between the notions of local and global.

The present collection of essays endeavours to chart a number of lines of enquiry suggested by th... more The present collection of essays endeavours to chart a number of lines of enquiry suggested by the reading of a Rushdian text that works against monological rhetoric on the themes of death, love, art and outsideness.
In the first part of the book the aspects highlighted by the authors of the essays are situated at the meeting-point between the text and the world: the presence of myths from classical Graeco-Roman antiquity (Orpheus and Eurydice, Apollo and Dionysus, Cassandra, Proteus) and from India (for instance the hybrid figure of the apsarâ), echoes of the Bible and European thinkers (R.M. Rilke and F. Nietzsche), the fascination of pop and rock music (Elvis Presley, Freddie Mercury, among others), and inevitably the political subtext of yesterday and today (Orpheus as the prototype of the coloniser on board the Argo).
In the second half of the book the aspects analysed lie at the meeting-point between the text and some elements that contribute to its formation: the montage, the chronotope, the narrator’s voice, dialogue, word-play, onomastics, the narrative-commentative modes. Attention also focuses on Rushdie’s idiolect as it appears in this novel and on some (possible) isotopic readings of the textual rise and destruction of a parallel/alternative world.
The great work of making real is entrusted once again to literature, which ultimately tells the truth about the unsolidity of solid ground and the big bad wolf of change, and about reality, potentiality and transformation.

Un... more La casuale scoperta di un manoscritto mette in moto una ricerca che altera certezze possedute. Un medico nazista finge di essere ebreo. Un uragano di sconvolgente e straordinaria intensità contiene al proprio centro un nucleo di estrema calma. Un violento terremoto distrugge la presunta totale solidità della terra sotto i nostri piedi. Nel tessuto linguistico dei testi studiati, questi elementi diventano le metafore dominanti in quattro romanzi contemporanei che riflettono sulla precarietà delle nostre conoscenze, sull'attraversamento di confini, sui percorsi trasformativi nell'esperienza umana.
Questo libro esamina i mutamenti formali che si sono manifestati nella tipologia frastagliata del romanzo contemporaneo in inglese. Indaga una serie di convenzioni che determinano la produzione del senso: le discussioni sul romanzo che si svolgono sulle soglie del romanzo stesso, elementi intertestuali colti nel rapporto testo-paratesto, campi semantici e gruppi metaforici dominanti, le strategie di disposizione testuale.
Vengono messi in luce due paradigmi culturali: da un lato, i testi che rientrano sotto la definizione di "postmoderno britannico" consegnano al lettore l'immagine di un mondo sospeso nel cinismo e nel banale, in cui l'uomo è inevitabilmente condannato al fallimento. D'altro canto, i testi postcoloniali, che non condividono sino in fondo la tonalità culturale occidentale, cercano vie per il senso entro un progetto conoscitivo che tende a ricostruire una visione del mondo e segnalano un ritorno alla riflessione filosofica e morale.

Nel loro discorso vanno argomentando le “buone ragioni” a cui si appellano per sostenere il proprio punto di vista. Questo volume ne studia la dimensione elocutiva, i meccanismi di pensiero, il modo in cui affrontano il problema dell’interpretazione e analizza, con particolare attenzione al livello retorico-argomentativo dei testi, il racconto del tenero assassino in “Porphyria’s Lover”, animato dal desiderio di conferire un significato univoco alle ambigue parole del lessico amoroso; il soliloquio del selvaggio filosofo in “Caliban Upon Setebos”, riflessione sulla natura e sulla posizione dell’uomo entro di essa; l’espressività dialogica dell’ironico soggetto collettivo in “Holy- Cross Day”; i monologhi drammatici del conte Guido Franceschini in The Ring and the Book, nei quali la tortuosa ricerca della verità appare condizionata dalle modalità di strutturazione linguistica dell’esperienza. Accomunati dalla riflessione sul linguaggio come filo conduttore di ogni possibile ontologia, i testi presi in esame pongono in risalto vari aspetti del processo di costruzione dei concetti, la problematica condivisione di significati nell’interazione umana e il carattere interpretativo di ogni esperienza.
