The essay focuses on the representation of architecture and urban space in the first phase of Ján... more The essay focuses on the representation of architecture and urban space in the first phase of János Térey's career (until the turn of the millennium). After an introduction on the connections of the oeuvre and depictions of the built environment in the context of literary history, the paper interprets the city images of Térey's works, distinguishing three paradigms: (1) that can be called visionary, in the texts of the 1990s, where the city is an unsettling, transitory, but, in terms of the unfolding of the personality, inspiring space; (2) in the period around the millennium, where the city appears as a social issue, and the questions of ruins and the destruction of buildings come into the foreground; and (3) from the second half of the 2000s onwards, where the representation of cities focus on the interrelationship between individual and social memory: archaeological exploration of the history of buildings is a means of self-understanding and common way of dealing with the past; the rhetoric around city images is increasingly focusing on heritage conservation. The essay then takes a closer look at the first two paradigms: firstly, the volumes A természetes arrogancia and A valóságos Varsó, then Drezda februárban and Paulus (with Warsaw and Dresden as the two most important cities), interpreting the different patterns of interconnectedness between history and identity, destruction and construction.

The paper approaches the last forty-fifty years of Hungarian prose from a politico-historical and... more The paper approaches the last forty-fifty years of Hungarian prose from a politico-historical and narratological point of view, combining (1) readings of individual pieces of fiction, (2) interpretations of long-term processes in literary production and (3) computerized readings using methods of Digital Humanities on a corpus of 46 volumes. As a starting point the authors identify the so-called ’Pannonian prose’ of Miklós Mészöly in a context of intellectual history regarding the discourse on the notion of Central (or Eastern) Europe in the 1980–90s. The paper then follows the trace of this highly influential Mészöly corpus first in the most canonised works of fiction between the 1980s and 2010, then in the most acclaimed novels and short story collections between 2010 and 2020. Style changes convey shifts in social, political and historical notions of the works, which are thus also interpreted as a slow process: from Central (Eastern) European regional thought to questions of national history and identity, then to family history and identity, later to the life and problems of individual persons. After showing how this process went on in recent Hungarian literature, the paper tries to answer why it happened, drawing some cautious conclusions on the dialectics of inclusiveness—closedness and Western cultural and political influences on Hungarian culture.

Ezek a kérdések, mint minden nagy prózaírónál, egyszerre poétikaiak, vagyis a szöveg megalkotására vonatkoznak, és politikaiak, vagyis történelmi, társadalmi keretben is értelmezhetők. Tompa Andrea regénye-úgy, ahogy a mai magyar prózában kevesekössztársadalmi, nemzeti, európai jelentőségű kérdésekhez érdekes gondolatokkal járul hozzá, és ezt rendkívül magas színvonalon teszi. A regény legnagyobb truvája, hogy az, ahogyan az egyediben meglátszik az univerzális, az egyéniben az örök emberi, az sohasem allegorikus, nem publicisztikus, és nem a problémák közhelyesítésére szolgál, hanem a szöveg gondolati horizontjának őrült méretű és szép kitágulását eredményezi-miközben a regény nyelve hihetetlenül redukált, szűkszavú, tömör, és olyan földhözragadt, mint egy bevásárlólista.
