COMMUNITY RELOCATION

Well, I've been putting it off (mostly because I'm lazy), but the time has finally come: due to the new LJ TOS issues, this community is moving to Dreamwidth:

picfor1000.dreamwidth.org

I have already imported all the entries and comments posted prior to this; if, for whatever reason, you're not comfortable having a past post of yours there and you'd like it deleted, please let me know and I'll take care of it as soon as possible (my email is slodwick at slodwick dot com). If I understand things correctly, you should still be able to post over there even if you don't have a dreamwidth account, using your LJ credentials via OpenID (I am not positive about this, though.)

I'm not sure yet what will happen with this community--whether I'll leave it as is, or delete it outright--but at least this way the community is backed up.

Challenge 15: Assignment List

Hey hey hey! It's that time!

This is the master list of all participants & their assigned photo. As with previous years, each assignment is a link to a photo on Flickr. Please be sure to refresh your knowledge of the challenge guidelines below, as well.

If you signed up and your name isn't here, or if the photo you were assigned has been removed, please let me know ASAP and I'll fix it!

Collapse )

Last year's brainstorming post is also still available, where folks who are feeling blocked/uninspired by their image can ask for help from their fellow participants there. Feel free to jump in and help each other out; it might even help to get your own creative juices flowing!

General Guidelines

  • As always, all stories must be exactly 1000 words, no more, no less1. Any fandom, pairing, rating or genre is welcome, including crossover, RPF or original fiction. Also, stories may be in any language you like, as long as there are words or word-equivalents.

  • The photos are intended to serve as inspiration; the subject of the photo can appear in your story, or any part can act as a starting point -- in other words photos need not be a literal part of the story! Feel free to gain inspiration from the title on the Flickr page, as well, or disregard it, as you choose. In short, just be creative and have fun!

  • If the muse strikes, you may write more than one story based on your photograph, but each must be a completely separate story of 1000 words. Your entry/entries can be part of series only if each story can stand on its own.

  • All stories should be completed no later than March 31, 2017. Participants may post their stories any time before that, in whatever forum they wish, but you should still post a link here in the community.

Community Guidelines

  • This is an open community, and all participants are free to join it. Participants are expected to either post their entire story here (behind a cut-tag, obvs), or post a link to the story here if it's posted elsewhere. If you have no LJ presence, I can post your link here for you - just let me know!

  • Please use the following header format when posting:

    Title:
    Author:
    Fandom:
    Spoilers:
    (if any)

You may also include pairings, ratings, disclaimers, author's notes, etc., if you want, but those are not required.

  • If you include the picture with your story, it must be behind an lj-cut. Also, please take note any copyright restrictions for your assigned image before using or posting elsewhere, and give credit where it's due2.

  • Participants should tag their posts with both "challenge 15" and the appropriate fandom tag. If the fandom does not exist, I'll follow along behind and create one later; just include whatever you can!

If you have any further questions or issues with your image, please leave a comment on this post!

Good luck everyone, and thanks for playing!

1. We operate mostly on the honor system here, so you may use whatever method you like to count your words. As long as that method says you're at 1000 words exactly, you may consider yourself a #winner. (Disclaimer: winners do not receive a prize of any sort, beyond, you know... personal pride or whatever. Probably. I'm not super familiar with the concept.)

2. Management is not responsible if the picture's owner comes at you, is what I'm saying. Follow rules and be polite, guys. Both here, and in life generally, really. #goodadvice

Challenge #15: Supersingular

OOPS. Hey, guess who has two thumbs and completely, 100% forgot her own flipping challenge? THIS LADY. /o\

The 15th Annual 'A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words' Challenge: Supersingular

So, It's Like This...

The challenge goes as follows: each participant is assigned a picture that will serve as the inspiration for a story (how you define "inspiration" is up to you). The catch is that each story must be exactly one thousand words in length, no more, no less - and trust me, it's not as easy as it sounds!

Everyone gets one picture to start. It's called a challenge for a reason, so you may need to get creative. Just remember: the picture itself need only serve as inspiration, not necessarily be a literal part of the story.

Any fandom, pairing, rating, or genre (including real person and original fic) is welcome. Stories won't be due until March 31, 2017, which means gives you two full months to write!

The Twist

Every year I add a theme to the challenge. This is the 15th year for the challenge, and it turns out there are 15 so-called "supersingular" prime numbers, according to the delightfully-named Moonshine Theory. Now I'm not cruel enough to ask you all to write about numbers, so instead, you will each receive a picture of a (super!) singular person or item.

Again, this need only serve as inspiration. Stories do not need to be explicitly about the photograph, and the subject or item does not necessarily need to even feature in your story. We're just trying to get the motor running!

Ready to play? Comment here no later than Tuesday, January 31, 2017 Sorry - closed for this year!

I will post assignments & instructions here in the comm on February 1, 2017, so you'll probably want to friend/bookmark the community, if you haven't already.

Please feel free to spread the word wherever you want. The more, the merrier, and everyone, in all fandoms, is welcome to play. If you don't have an LJ account, just comment and tell me your Tumblr/Twitter handle or whatever - that will do.

If you have any further questions, please don't put them in this post. Send me a private message or email me at [email protected] instead. Thanks!

Last day!

BOOP BOOP BOOP!

This is it, folks: If you haven't already, today tomorrow is the last day to write your fic and be considered on time! Anything after today tomorrow is considered late, and... oh, boy, isn't that a shame?

Thanks so much to everyone who played again this year!

ETA: Ok, sure, fine. Leap years are a thing, I GUESS. Tomorrow is the deadline. You're all smarter than the mod, are you happy?? ;)

Challenge #14: Brainstorming Post

Has your picture assignment left you feeling uninspired? Flummoxed about what it is, exactly? Confused about life in general?

Well, this is the place to get some help (with those first two things, at least)!

Sometimes, just coming at things from a different perspective can help, and hopefully, one of your fellow participants or community viewers can get you moving down a more creative path! If you're struggling, comment here and elaborate on what it is that's causing your vexation: is your picture unsuited or anachronistic for your fandom? Do you feel the image is boring? Is the subject the source of a phobia for you (eek, sorry!)? Please include a link to your picture, too.

Please be mindful to respect the original photographers (in case they stumble over here), and also one another. We're all in this game together folks, and, besides, I'm not that great as a moderator. Don't make me be mean.

CHALLENGE #14: Money (That's What I Want)

The 14th Annual 'A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words' Challenge: Money (That’s What I Want)

Any fandom, pairing, rating or genre (including real person and original fic) is welcome. Stories won't be due until February 29, 2016, which means gives you two full months ALMOST two months to write! [Time got away from me a little, so we’re getting a slightly later start this year – sorry!]

The Twist

Every year I add a theme to the challenge. This year, I struggled to think of something appropriately “14”-ish, but I came up short. But then I remembered that basically every person I know fell in love with the musical Hamilton this year, so… this year’s theme is MONEY! Each photo will have something to do with money, banks, jewels, shopping, etc.

Again, this need only serve as inspiration. Stories do not need to be explicitly about the photograph, and money does not necessarily need to be a feature of your story.

Challenge #13: Assignment List

Here we go! This is the master list of all participants & their assigned photo. As with previous years, each assignment is a link to a photo (mostly on Flickr). Please be sure to refresh your knowledge of the challenge guidelines below, as well.

ETA: Flickr appears to be giving some people trouble when it comes to viewing their images without signing in to Yahoo? This is SO IRRITATING, and I apologize if that's happening to you. Based on evil_little_dog's experience, if you right-click & copy the link, then open it in a new tab, that might get around the issue?

If you signed up and your name isn't here, or if the photo you were assigned has been removed, please let me know ASAP and I'll fix it.

CHALLENGE #13: UNLUCKY YOU

The 13th Annual 'A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words' Challenge: Unlucky You

So, It's Like This...

The challenge goes as follows: each participant is assigned a picture that will serve as the inspiration for a story (how you define "inspiration" is up to you). The Twist

Every year I add a theme to the challenge. This year, the theme is Unlucky You: in some circles, the number 13 is considered unlucky, so each photo I assign will include some other sort of traditionally unlucky omen. Again, this need only serve as inspiration. Stories do not need to be explicitly about the photograph, and the omen does not need to appear in the story itself... just be creative!
