…but every unhappy village is unhappy in its own way.
What misfortune is plaguing this settlement? (Roll 1d12):
- At night, something prowls through the village. Nobody can say for sure what it is, only that it’s fast, strong, and hostile. The whole town shuts down from sunset to sunrise. Anybody outside after dark risks being attacked by the intruder, or paranoid guards.
- The village has made a pact with a powerful creature to provide protection in exchange for a quarterly human sacrifice. A lottery determines who will be the tribute, but the drawing is rigged so that nobody among the village elite are selected.
- A violent criminal organization uses the entire village a front operation. Everyone in town is either in the gang or intimidated into acquiescence.
- A localized temporal distortion causes the town to experience the same day over and over again. A person has to spend at least one night within the village to become locked into the time loop.
- Someone (something?) knows every villager’s secrets and has been posting detailed accounts in the town square. Everyone is either angry that they’ve been outed or fearful that they’re next. All attempts to catch the perpetrator have failed.
- The village and its surroundings are beset by brief but powerful tremors. The timing appears to be random, but perhaps there’s a trigger?
- The bodies in the village graveyard have started reanimating. Once they dig their way out of the ground, the undead try to resume their lives, to the consternation of their survivors.
- All the livestock and domesticated animals in the village have attained sentience and revolted. Now, the villagers are forced to perform the roles of beasts of burden.
- The entire town is split into two rival factions over a matter seemingly trivial to an outsider, but treated as deadly serious to either side.
- A capricious and utterly annoying supernatural entity torments the village with cruel pranks; nothing deadly, but always inconvenient.
- Whenever anyone goes to sleep, they suffer from terrible nightmares. Lately, some of these dreams appear to come true.
- One morning, an strange monument mysteriously appeared in the center of town. People who touch it disappear and come back… changed. (Replicant? Evil twin? Trying to grapple with a revelation about the fundamental nature of reality?)
