However, it is reported that Filipino Lesbian, Gay, Transgender and Bisexual (LGBT) community, especially LGBT students are struggling with bullying and discrimination from families, communities and schools. This paper aims to explore the works conducted by the first Filipino student LGBT organization (UP Babaylan), major barriers experienced by the organization, the challenges and problems faced by LGBT Filipino students, and the possible solutions to address these issues. This is a qualitative study and 13 members of the ‘UP Babaylan’ were interviewed after getting written informed consent. All the interviews were transcribed and thematically analyzed using NVivo 11. Findings of the study suggest that the organization has conducted a number of activities, such as educating and sensitizing, coordinating with HIV clinics and other organizations to help LGBT students, lobbying to pass the anti-discrimination bill and conduct UP...

For such an analysis, he has been concerned with a whole range of phenomena which might be classifIed as social-historical, psychological, and linguistic. The design of this comparative study of modes of thought was developed out of the intellectual interests we have noted. Each of the four sections of the study is developed on a common plan. First there is some discussion of language and logic, of the characteristic ways in which each of these Asian peoples habitually made certain types of judgment and inferences. In each section the author then proceeds to the manifestations of these patterns in formal philosophical writing, in literature, and in individual and group behavior. In each section Buddhism is used, in the manner described earlier, as a kind of chemical precipitant to isolate those indigenous habits of thinking that are most enduring and resistant to change. Mr. Nakamura is aware that explicit logic and philosophical formulations of all kinds are the particular property of the small educated elites in the societies he is considering. But, if I interpret him correctly, he regards the philosophizing of the elite as a kind of translation into more general and abstract terms of the problems encountered in the common life of the society. And, in turn, folk sayings, proverbs, everyday thought reflect a translation downward or a seeping downward of what the philosophers have voiced. To fInd evidence of how this occurred and of how Buddhist ideas and values entered into this process in the four societies, Mr. Nakamura has cast a wide net. He has combed folk literature, prayers and the scriptures of popular cults, collections of proverbs, descriptions of everyday life and, wherever possible, he has used -the accounts of foreign observers whose fresh eyes often register characteristics that escape the native critic of his own society. Thus, in the end we are shown not only how each elite grappled with the problems of Buddhist thought and belief but also how this process affected habits of thought and modes of behavior in the society as a whole. The present revised English edition reflects at many points the development of Mr. Nakamura's thought in the period since 1947. When the fIrst Japanese version was written, Japan was only beginning to emerge from the isolation of years of war and military rule. Since that time Mr. Nakamura has read widely in newer writings in the fIelds of philosophy, anthropology, and linguistics. During 1951-1952, he visited Stanford University where his work was the focus of a year-long faculty seminar. Again in 1962-1963 he discussed his fIndings with a seminar of scholars at the East-West Center. Portions of his book, certain lines of argument, and much of the documentation have been revised in the light of the author's experiences over the last fIfteen years. It is a pleasure to present this revised English edition to the Western reader. In its pages scholar and layman alike will find a wealth of insight into the range of great problems with which Mr. Nakamura is concerned. He will also, I think, come to admire its author as a tireless explorer on the frontiers of knowledge, a scholar whose virtuousity in research is matched by his relentless drive towards new understandings.

Metchnikoff is rightly famous for his recognition of the biological significance of leukocyte recruitment and phagocytosis of microbes in host defence against infection, inflammation and immunity. As a comparative zoologist he utilised a broad range of model organisms for microscopic studies in vivo and in vitro. His work prefigures much of contemporary research in innate immunity. In this brief review, I cover some details of his Europe-wide life in Russia (mainly Odessa) and at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. He had a complex personality, yet his creative genius, imagination and insights justify the title of ''Father of natural immunity''.
This review is presented as a common foundation for scientists interested in nanoparticles, their... more This review is presented as a common foundation for scientists interested in nanoparticles, their origin, activity, and biological toxicity. It is written with the goal of rationalizing and informing public health concerns related to this sometimes-strange new science of "nano," while raising awareness of nanomaterials' toxicity among scientists and manufacturers handling them. We show that humans have always been exposed to tiny particles via dust storms, volcanic ash, and other natural processes, and that our bodily systems are well adapted to protect us from these potentially harmful intruders. The reticuloendothelial system, in particular, actively neutralizes and eliminates foreign matter in the body, including viruses and nonbiological particles. Particles originating from human activities have existed for millennia, e.g., smoke from combustion and lint from garments, but the recent development of industry and combustion-based engine transportation has profoundly increased anthropogenic particulate pollution. Significantly, technological advancement has also changed the character of particulate pollution, increasing the proportion of nanometer-sized particles-"nanoparticles"-and expanding the variety of chemical compositions. Recent epidemiological studies have shown a strong correlation between particulate air pollution levels, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, various cancers, and mortality. Adverse effects of nanoparticles on human health depend on individual factors such as genetics and existing disease, as well as exposure, and nanoparticle chemistry, size, shape, agglomeration state, and electromagnetic properties. Animal and human studies show that inhaled nanoparticles are less efficiently removed than larger particles by the macrophage clearance mechanisms in the lungs, causing lung damage, and that nanoparticles can translocate through the circulatory, lymphatic, and nervous systems to many tissues and organs, including the brain. The key to understanding the toxicity of nanoparticles is that their minute size, smaller than cells and cellular organelles, allows them to penetrate these basic biological structures, disrupting their normal function. Examples of toxic effects include tissue inflammation, and altered cellular redox balance toward oxidation, causing abnormal function or cell death. The manipulation of matter at the scale of atoms, "nanotechnology," is creating many new materials with characteristics not always easily predicted from current knowledge. Within the nearly limitless diversity of these materials, some happen to be toxic to biological systems, others are relatively benign, while others confer health benefits. Some of these materials have desirable characteristics for industrial applications, as nanostructured materials often exhibit beneficial properties, from UV absorbance in sunscreen to oil-less lubrication of motors. A rational science-based approach is needed to minimize harm caused by these materials, while supporting continued study and appropriate industrial development. As current knowledge of the toxicology of "bulk" materials may not suffice in reliably predicting toxic forms of nanoparticles, ongoing and expanded study of "nanotoxicity" will be necessary. For nanotechnologies with clearly associated health risks, intelligent design of materials and devices is needed to derive the benefits of these new technologies while limiting adverse health impacts. Human exposure to toxic nanoparticles can be reduced through identifying creation-exposure pathways of toxins, a study that may someday soon unravel the mysteries of diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Reduction in fossil fuel combustion would have a large impact on global human exposure to nanoparticles, as would limiting deforestation and desertification. While nanotoxicity is a relatively new concept to science, this review reveals the result of life's long history of evolution in the presence of nanoparticles, and how the human body, in particular, has adapted to defend itself against nanoparticulate intruders.

His research on birdsong learning gave rise to a thriving subfield. An important tenet of this growing subfield is that parallels between birdsong and human speech make songbirds valuable as models in comparative and transla-tional research, particularly in the case of vocal learning and development. Decades ago, Marler pointed out several phenomena common to the processes of vocal development in songbirds and humans-including a dependence on early acoustic experience, sensitive periods, predispositions , auditory feedback, intrinsic reinforcement, and a progression through distinct developmental stages-and he advocated for the value of comparative study in this domain. To contrast the spiritual life one can hope to achieve with Christianity, with a Humanitarian ref... more To contrast the spiritual life one can hope to achieve with Christianity, with a Humanitarian reference point that it is directly symmetrical with human experience, with the quality of life we live was new in Dante's time. While not radical, or overly revolutionary even in literary terms, what Dante sought to examine, and in some sense prove is that human experience, that encompasses virtue, and vice, how we perceive our thoughts, our actions, and our deeds, and the events which lead to credence in terms of faith, and belief can be modified to show the reality of our spiritual growth, and development in the life cycle of human emotion. This article shows that Dante was not chauvinistic or homophobic. In fact it is the qualities that one can derive as universal based on human experiences that make the Divine Comedy the commentary on religious view point that it is. We discover that Dante did not place the love of Christ above the experience of human love, attachment, attraction and commitment. That fulfillment of ones life's purpose is not seen as a beatitude, but drawn from the uncanny, and wide ranging scope of human emotion as it relates to existence. While sin is accounted for in comparison to his reaching the fulfillment of his passion. We will see that Dante is not making that many many theoretical points, but only drawing from human existence, and life's universal qualities. A beautiful and lyrical account about how faith, and devotion is the universal good that spiritual beliefs can only promise. Dante brings out the divine semblance that human love is powerful, and worthy of recognition as all of our spiritual claims and pursuits, that it will, as it does naturally, surpass our reason to seek Gods will for us while ascending in this life, and the after life.

In fact it is the qualities that one can derive as universal based on human experiences that make the Divine Comedy the commentary on religious view point that it is. We discover that Dante did not place the love of Christ above the experience of human love, attachment, attraction and commitment. That fulfillment of ones life's purpose is not seen as a beatitude, but drawn from the uncanny, and wide ranging scope of human emotion as it relates to existence. While sin is accounted for in comparison to his reaching the fulfillment of his passion. We will see that Dante is not making that many many theoretical points, but only drawing from human existence, and life's universal qualities. A beautiful and lyrical account about how faith, and devotion is the universal good that spiritual beliefs can only promise. Dante brings out the divine semblance that human love is powerful, and worthy of recognition as all of our spiritual claims and pursuits, that it will, as it does naturally, surpass our reason to seek Gods will for us while ascending in this life, and the after life.

As a comparative zoologist he utilised a broad range of model organisms for microscopic studies in vivo and in vitro. His work prefigures much of contemporary research in innate immunity. In this brief review, I cover some details of his Europe-wide life in Russia (mainly Odessa) and at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. He had a complex personality, yet his creative genius, imagination and insights justify the title of ''Father of natural immunity''.

He depicts all intelligence as being formed by knowledge and reason. Of which he states dates back to the classical thought to " know thy self ". In his review he is making the point that this philosophical thought lacks unity among academic scholars today. He points to different periods of philosophical periods such as the Enlightenment, and the Romantic period, as he states that by the time Freud and Marx have come into fruition the emphasis on the working class as a form of state governance, and the school of thought that depicts all intelligence as coming from within a psychological depth, is in contrast to the humanitarian frame work set by Classical Philosophers. This contrast he asserts creates a disunity, among academic scholars that shows no autonomy, or agreed upon school of knowledge and reason. Therefore, those questions which need to be asked to understand what is right for people are lacking in a foundation.
