Ray Carvell, R.I.P.

RayCarvell

Ray Carvell, pictured here in his Penrose gun shop, died this week. Ray was one of the good guys. The Carvell family and their shop hit the headlines in 2006 when a numb nut tried to attack the staff with a machete, and Ray’s son Greg shot him (the numb nut) in self-defence.

The resulting police persecution of son Greg, was very unpleasant for the family – as Free Radical readers will remember from Ray’s interview in issue 76. (You can read my posts on the shooting and subsequent prosecution here.)

I’d like to extend my best wishes and those of NOT PC’s readers to Ray’s family at this time.

Another idiot taking a knife to the Carvell's gun shop

BREAKING NEWS: The Carvell's gun shop has been attacked again. Last year a machete-wielding idiot burst in looking to "get a gun and commit suicide" and was shot by gun shop manager Greg Carvell, who was then arrested for the public service he performed. And just before midday today a knife-wielding fuckwit burst in. He was subdued by police with a taser and pepper spray "just over 10 minutes after the emergency call" - a better performance than last year when the police took more than twenty minutes after turning up at the wrong address.

You can be sure after the last year of demonisation by police for the crime of defending themselves, the Carvells would have thought several times before putting themselves through that again. In an interview for the next Free Radical Ray Carvell said the earlier ordeal has affected his son Greg.
"It has changed him, there’s no question about that. He’ll never be the same man again. It takes a lot of guts to pull a trigger on somebody. You ask anybody who’s had to do it; it’s not an easy choice to make... The end result of this prosecution is what they do every time somebody defends himself. He is criminalised and punished even if he gets off; he is punished by remuneration. The kind of pressure that goes on to you --where you are made to feel like a criminal -- this is the real thing that takes a toll on you: the whole thing is not clear cut, and I can swear that with everything going on, the criminal has had better treatment than us."
"The kind of pressure" the Carvells disgracefully had to endure undoubtedly led them to risk their own lives for ten minutes this morning by calling the police and waiting rather than responding as they did before. Thank goodness there are no reported casualties.

Great news!

The police case against Greg Carvell, who shot a machete-wielding man in the Carvell's family gun shop, has been dismissed.

Great news! But why the hell did it take a year to come to this, with all the stress involved in the charges being laid and heard and talked up?

Greg Carvell defends himself again, this time in court

Greg Carvell is in court tomorrow at 9:30am, defending himself against the charge of defending himself. As I've said before, it's not a court appearance he deserves but a medal.

If you want to help, you could show up in the Auckland District Court to give him support, or you could just send funds to the Greg Carvell defence fund. As Oswald says, "that could easily be me -- or any one of us. It doesn't have to be a shooting, either-- you could cream some lowlife with a frying pan and wind up in the dock in this country..."

Do you think you should have the right to defend your life? Now is the time to stand up for it!

UPDATE: Greg Carvell has elected trial by jury, and will reappear for that in the new year. Good to hear protests outside the court upholding the right to self-defence as a a real human right.

Medal for gun dealer, not court

Auckland gun dealer Greg Carvell should be applauded, not charged, for defending himself and his co-workers from the idiot who brought a machete to a gun-shop. Libertarianz Firearms deregulation spokesman Peter Linton agrees:
"Auckland Gun Dealer Greg Carvell should be applauded for his actions in defending himself from a machete wielding aggressor in his shop last July," says Peter Linton, Libertarianz Firearms Spokesman. "It's disgusting that the police are charging Carvell with 'possessing a firearm without lawful, proper or sufficient purposes'."

"It is perfectly reasonable for Carvell, or any other responsible New Zealander, to possess a firearm for self-defence. The right to defend oneself and one's loved ones must not be attacked, Linton explains. "This is a ridiculous charge against a law-abiding New Zealand citizen who should be given a medal. Why are the Police putting criminals before their victims?
Good question. Perhaps, as a colleague says, they're trying to turn gun shops into safe work environments for criminals? If more of us were armed and willing to defend ourselves then perhaps more criminals would end up in hospital instead of their victims -- victims such as the poor Dutch couple savaged over the weekend by animals in human clothing.

Unfortunately, however, the New Zealand police believe they have more right to defend themselves and their property than the average NZ citizen...

I urge readers to e-mail Police Minister Annette King - [email protected] - and express your outrage at this decision.

UPDATE: Good comment on this from the Crusader Rabbit: Non-negotiable right.

Libz on the NRA news

The news of the man who literally brought a knife to a gun fight has reached the US.

"Auckland gun dealer Greg Carvell should be applauded for his actions in defending himself from a machete wielding aggressor in his shop yesterday," said Libertarianz Firearms Spokesman Peter Linton on the 27th of July. Yesterday he was invited to discuss the case on the NRA News - that's the National Rifle Association News -- in Washington DC.

It's often surprising where press releases end up.

You can hear the interview here at Julian's place.
