Glitchwoods

I forgot to change the file! Here is the version with midi sync and autopan. In addition, the dry mute switch now works like it does in the pedal, cutting the input while glitches are playing.

A take on a Jonny Greenwood style stutter/glitch effect, as exemplified by TKOG Miniglitch pedal. Now with midi sync, lowpass, and autopan. This isn’t the best midi sync in the world, but it is the one I could manage. Hopefully any glitches meld with the general glitchiness.

As anybody who has ever opened one of my patches knows, I still have no idea what I’m doing and this probably sucks; it just uses vanilla delay objects so it is pretty hacky and definitely glitchy. It sounds good for me with guitar in any case though. This patch does violate what I consider to be the sacred rule of organelle interface controls – the knobs don’t correspond to screen lines 1 – 4 and instead are crowded onto the first two lines in order to make room for visual feedback regarding the note button controls. Be warned.

Overview: Glitch / stutter / repeat effect with four different modes for triggering recording: manual (controlled by footswitch or aux button), threshold (with sensitivity controls provided) or random (50/50 chance of recording at fixed intervals or at randomized times). The length of the repeat can be fixed or randomized within a set range. The buffer can be set to clear at each new record trigger, or layered, with a feedback control for setting the rate at which old material is replaced by new. The record trigger can last as long as the footswitch is held / threshold is exceeded, or can be set to automatically update with the current repeat time. In manual mode, latching or momentary operation is available. Accepts input from left or right but just adds them together; reverb output is stereo.

Controls:
Navigate menus with ‘black’ keys; C# to G# for control pages and high B-flat for preset page. White notes do things:
C = buffer mode – overdub new recordings or clear with trigger;
D = dry signal kill/thru;
E = record type – index to buffer length or not (automatically on for random and tempo modes);
F = manual latch on/off;
G = Autopan Off/On (I might add more control over this later);
A = Resonant Lowpass filter Off/On;
High B = clear delay lines.
Page 1:
Knob 1: Record mode.
Knob 2: FB% (only applies when recording new material; this may seem weird, but allows for control over fading out the buffer in a way which seems musical to me)
Knob 3: Minimum repeat time (if range set to 0, this is repeat time)
Knob 4: Range of random variation on top of minimum repeat time

Page 2:
Knob 1: Level at which recording initiated
Knob 2: level at which recording stops (in held mode)
Screen line 5 displays current input level for fine tuning threshold.

Page 3:
Knob 1: Sets interval for random triggers (0 = random)

Page 4:
Knob 1: Sets tempo if no clock detected
Knob 2: Interval at which to potentially record
Knob 3: % chance of recording at interval
Knob 4: Length of recording (0 = random beat division)

Page 5:
Knob 1: Dry level (if dry thru on; I know it seems weird having both, but I like the button trigger for use with a midi pedalboard)
Knob 2: Reverb mix
Knob 3: Lowpass cutoff
Knob 4: Lowpass Q

Okay there you have it. Let me know if something doesn’t work. There are definitely some combinations of options that don’t make sense; I recommend messing around with the manual mode to get a feeling for it before trying the others. With buffer set to clear, fb = 100%, and latch = off, you get a standard repeat effect that only plays when the footswitch/aux is held. Setting the buffer to oDub, feedback lower than 90, and keeping record mode on ‘held’, you can use the length of time you hold the footswitch down to lower the volume of the current loop, which can be very nice. I’m still planning on adding true stereo input at some point.     I just spent an hour playing with your patch :)
    I fed it with a drum machine, guitar, and both at the same time — HUGE!
    Time just flew by :)

    I think MIDI sync could definitely be useful, yes — and while playing, I thought it would be really awesome if the repeated moments could be pitched (+12 / -12), maybe randomly… or not :)
