Oxford has been at the forefront of the development of Critical Care Echocardiography as a devolved specialty and uses the technology in everyday assessment of the critically ill patient (please see JICS 11:1 2010).
Echocardiography on the Oxford AICU and CICU is performed by the in-house Oxford Critical Care Echo Service lead by Claire Colebourn and her imaging consultant colleagues Graham Barker (point of care ultrasound lead), Dave Garry and Adrian Wong. With close links to the Cardiology department the service performs over 300 clinical transthoracic echoes annually and is fully equipped with advanced portable echo platforms. Oxford is one of the largest volume FICE accreditation centres in the UK and has been involved in setting up the current accreditation processes in critical care echo from the outset.
Service and training are provided by the Consultant leads and dedicated senior and junior Fellows in Critical Care Echocardiography who work towards achieving Critical Care Accreditation with the British Society of Echocardiography over an intensive training period.

For those in Buckinghamshire hospitals, Justin Mandeville offers an opportunity for supervised ECHO as part of FICE training on Thursday afternoons. If anyone in the region is interested then they can contact him directly.
Milton Keynes department of critical care has two FICE mentors and a mechanism for FICE sign off via cardiology.
Wexham Park Hospital has one FICE mentor and actively encourages training in echocardiography and point of care ultrasound.
