Despite the vast historiography of the Second World War the importance of Anglo-Spanish relations... more Despite the vast historiography of the Second World War the importance of Anglo-Spanish relations has largely been disregarded. The research accompanying the study of the Second World War is voluminous, yet relatively little attention has been given to those countries that are not the main protagonists. The historiography that does exist plays down the importance of Spain’s actions during the Second World War. My dissertation research has involved finding documents that shed light on Anglo-Spanish relations and in particular the role of Britain in influencing Spain’s stance during the Second World War using covert and overt operations simultaneously. My dissertation will highlight the significance of these operations in preventing, firstly, Spain from entering the war on the side of the Axis; secondly, in protecting interests in the Mediterranean, and lastly, in preventing a German occupation of the Spanish mainland which would have contributed to the Axis’ war effort.
In order to provide a study of Anglo-Spanish relations during the Second World War I have utilised a number of different archives. The archives in Madrid and the archives at Cambridge University Library are just some of the collections of primary sources which give an insight into Anglo-Spanish relations. Evidence of British efforts to prevent Spain from entering the war on the side of the Germans can also be found in the War Cabinet papers, Foreign Office records, Special Operations Executive records and the Prime Minister’s Correspondence and Papers in the National Archives in Kew.

Since 9/11, the global war on terrorism has elicited a growing focus from academics and historian... more Since 9/11, the global war on terrorism has elicited a growing focus from academics and historians. Separatist terrorism, and the responses to it, in contrast, has failed to generate the same fervour in the twenty-first century. However, the recent disbandment of the Basque separatist terrorist group, Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA), after more than fifty years of terrorist activity, as well as the current calls for independence in Catalonia, have provoked renewed discussions concerning separatist terrorism.This paper aims to assess the role of counterterrorism in perpetuating separatism, using the case studies of ETA and the IRA, in order to demonstrate the ineffectiveness of repressive counterterrorism in democratic states, and the importance of other factors in bringing an end to terrorist violence.
