The Cult of Saints
The Cult of Saints is a major five-year project, based at the Faculty of History at the University of Oxford and funded by an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council, which will investigate the origins and development of the cult of Christian saints.
The project, which launched in January 2014, will map the cult of saints as a system of beliefs and practices in its earliest and most fluid form, from its origins until around AD 700 (by which date most cult practices were firmly established): the evolution from honouring the memory of martyrs, to their veneration as intercessors and miracle-workers; the different ways that saints were honoured and their help solicited; the devotion for relics, sacred sites and images; the miracles expected from the saints.
Central to the project is a searchable database, on which all the evidence for the cult of saints will be collected, presented (in its original languages and English translation), and succinctly discussed, whether in Armenian, Coptic, Georgian, Greek, Latin or Syriac. Towards the end of the project this database will be made freely available on line.
The Cult of Saints project is directed by Dr Bryan Ward-Perkins (Oxford University), the Principal Investigator, who is also overseeing the work on the evidence in Greek.
Engaged on the project are a number of subject specialists, overseeing specific linguistic areas: Prof Theo van Lint (Oxford University) for Armenian and Georgian; Dr Arietta Papaconstantinou (University of Reading) for Coptic; Dr David Taylor (Oxford University) for Syriac; Dr Robert Wiśniewski (University of Warsaw) for Latin.
The Research Associates working full-time on the project are:
Dr Nikoloz Aleksidze for the Armenian and Georgian evidence, who completed a doctorate at Oxford in 2013, and has subsequently been teaching at the Free University of Tbilisi.
Dr Sergey Minov for the Syriac evidence, who completed a doctorate at the Hebrew University in Jeruslaem in 2013, and has subsequently held a research fellowship at the Freie Universität, Berlin.
Dr Efthymios Rizos for the Greek evidence, who completed a doctorate at Oxford in 2011, and has subsequently held a number of post-doctoral fellowships, particularly at Koç University, Istanbul.
Dr Gesa Schenke for the Coptic evidence, who completed a doctorate at Cologne University in 2000 and has most recently been working on a Leiden-based ERC project, The Formation of Islam.
Dr Marta Tycner for the Latin evidence, who completed a doctorate at Warsaw University in 2013 (where her work on the project will primarily be based).
The Project Administrator is Briony Truscott.
The Database Designer and Manager is Jeremy Worth, ICT Manager of the School of Archaeology, Oxford University.
