Design/methodology/approach A new business model canvas tool was created through abductive reasoning and a real-life case study. The case was a unique driving school digital platform that belongs to employee and professional service platforms. Findings The proposed business model canvas is based on Scholten's canvas (2016) for platform businesses and complements it by acknowledging changes in people's values and macro-environmental factors as new elements. Research limitations/implications (if applicable) The study is limited to an exemplary case of a driving school digital platform. However, the results and the novel canvas tool can be applied to innovating business models for digital service platforms in many industries. Originality/value The novelty of the study is derived from the insights created by the case study and the new tool that...

This study examines the construction of employer brand image among young health care professionals, and related elements. The qualitative research data were collected through email and personal interviews from young nursing and physician students. The analysis results indicate that organisations can affect their employer brand image for future employees through supportive working culture and human resource practices as well as direct marketing actions. The marketing and human resource practices targeted towards young health care professionals are underused. The results can help health care organisations in planning recruitment and marketing processes according to young health care professionals' expectations. This study integrates human resource management research and marketing research relating to employer branding and recruitment.

We will particularly concentrate on different currently important or increasingly important approaches and views on organizational learning which are particularly relevant from the standpoint of networked innovation. The approaches can also be considered to be rather fundamental and general perspectives that lie behind many other learning perspectives. We aim to analyze the different learning approaches and evaluate their suitability in various situations and conditions of innovation networks in particular. We also suggest some practices in the case of each learning approach

In many industries, the future workplace will be significantly different from that of today, changing the content of the work, the working environment and the way we work. In this study the effects of these workplace changes are discussed, based on both literature and practical experiences, from an engineering point of view as an example of highly knowledge-intensive work, and further research needs are identified.

Manufacturing industry needs to offer new perceptions of production work – and redeem the made promises. Introducing knowledge work tools to shop-floor production workers can have several motivations, such as improving employee productivity and improving competence management through increasing learning and collaboration at work, empowering employees, and increasing employee satisfaction. However, many changes in the work environment call for fundamental changes in attitudes and management of production work, which makes it challenging to identify those tools and mechanisms that allow matching the worker needs and firm-level competence management. Therefore, the aim of this study is to address the changes in working environments, and see how implementing knowledge work tools ...

Although the important impact of SMEs in economic growth and job creation is well known, current knowledge is rather limited on the effects of competences for changing the business models in SMEs. This paper focuses on the links between SME competence changes and business model innovations in industrial structural changes in the external environment. The findings of a comparative case study of Russian and Finnish SMEs identified the positive attitude to change and activeness in external networking and in seeking new opportunities as enabling competences for business model innovation. The practical implications highlight the competence transformation strategies enabling business model innovation and the effects of different instituti...

Lappeenranta University of Technology ISBN 978-952-214-770-7, ISBN 978-952-214-771-4 (PDF), ISSN 1456-4491 The thesis deals with the phenomenon of learning between organizations in innovation networks that develop new products, services or processes. Inter-organizational learning is studied especially at the level of the network. The role of the network can be seen as twofold: either the network is a context for inter-organizational learning, if the learner is something else than the network (organization, group, individual), or the network itself is the learner. Innovations are regarded as a primary source of competitiveness and renewal in organizations. Networking has become increasingly common particularly because of the possibility to extend the resource base of the organization through partnerships and to concentrate on core comp...

Business orientation of ETO companies is customer-centric due to the nature of ETO products, being tailored and customized according to specific requirements of each customer. However, this customer orientation may lead to inefficient performance, due to lack of mechanisms to reuse proven concepts, designs and production facilities as well as lack of feedback mechanisms from products in use and service. These challenges have been recognized in earlier empirical research projects conducted in companies providing ETO products. This paper is aiming at identification of factors hindering product related information reuse in ETO business environment, which comprises several networks of actors during lifecycle of ETO products. A typology of factors and challenges of information reuse is built-up and furt...

The challenge is to provide correct and right amount of information both to increase job satisfaction of workers and to increase productivity. The objective of this study is to identify what kind of manufacturing data, information and intelligent knowledge is needed by workers at the shop floor, and to identify the requirements when opening the knowledge flows between the shop floor and management processes. As a results of the study, a conceptual framework is created to link workers’ and organizational needs to data and information requirements. The framework identifies information and knowledge flows from and to required human-machine interfaces. This study also highlights the link between work processes at the shop floor to the innovation and organizational learning processes o...

The main objective of using PLM Maturity Assessment is to make the implementation of PLM better approachable and a more carefully planned process, since a significant portion of companies struggles heavily in adoption and implementation of PLM. In our paper, several approaches to PLM Maturity Assessment are discussed. Our aim is to study how maturity levels and dimensions should be redefined to enable companies, even those that are quite advanced today, to define their PLM roadmap for the next five to 10 years.
