Visions of the future for container nursery irrigation were collected from twelve nursery irrigat... more Visions of the future for container nursery irrigation were collected from twelve nursery irrigation scientists, growers and nursery organization leaders. The amount of water available for nursery irrigation unanimously is forecasted to decline over the next decade. Along with declining availability, the cost of water for irrigation is predicted to increase substantially for most nurseries. Limited availability, higher direct cost, and irrigation runoff issues are projected to compel the container nursery industry to adopt procedures and technology that will increase irrigation water use efficiency. Evidence in support of these prognoses, current solutions and suggested options are discussed.

Growth Acceleration and Increased Out Plant Survival of Ontario and Ohio Grown Tree Liners

A production system developed at Ohio State University (OSU), Columbus, OH, using retractable roo... more A production system developed at Ohio State University (OSU), Columbus, OH, using retractable roof greenhouses (RRGs) (Cravo Equipment, Ltd., Brantford, ON, Canada) and containerized tree liner production has indicated acceleration of production times when out planted to Pot-in-Pot (PIP) or nursery fields versus conventional bareroot (BR) or polyhouse production. The system also increased cropping consistency via reduced mortalities and showed promise in new market expansion, including higher priced, difficult-to-grow species. In 2004, #3 (trade 3-gallon or 11.4 L) containerized tree liners from RRGs had 0% mortality versus field BR production Quercus rubra at 42% after out-planting into nursery fields to grow on as specimen trees. Averaged over species, RRG liners reached saleable size of 50 mm caliper two years sooner than the BR liners (a 40% reduction in production time). In 2006, #3 containerized tree liners from RRG's had 27% mortality versus field BR production at 87% after out-planting to #7 (trade 7-gallon or 26.5 L) containers and harsh conditions in PIP fields. Averaged over species and one growing season, caliper and height of RRG liners were 82 and 84% larger than BR liners, respectively. Recently RRG liners have shown utility in high stress environments along Ontario, Canada highways leading The Ontario Ministry of Transportation to research an optimized planting process including use of RRG's liners.

Twelve-week-old Malus seedlings were induced to cold harden by exposure to low temperature and fr... more Twelve-week-old Malus seedlings were induced to cold harden by exposure to low temperature and freezing environments. The effectiveness of induced acclimation by exposure to stimuli such as low temperature (3 to 5 °C), frequency of exposure to freezing temperatures (-3 °C), storage time before and after induction and the effects of different screening temperatures (-20,-30, and-40 °C) were investigated with seedlings grown in a greenhouse from open-pollinated 'Golden Delicious' apple (Malus pumila (Mill.), 'Antonovka' apple (M. baccata (L.) Borkh. × (M. pumila) and 'Rescue ' apple (M. baccata) × (M. pumila). Differentiation of the seedling populations with respect to cold hardiness was not achieved until after acclimation at cool temperatures (3 to 5 °C) for 6 weeks. Further population differentiation was achieved by exposure to one or more frosts (-3 °C). Once the acclimation response had been initiated the seedlings could be held for up to 11 days, under the same conditions, with no signifi cant decrease in hardiness. Hardiness levels of acclimated and nonacclimated open pollinated seedlings coincided with known inherent hardiness responses for all three maternal cultivars evaluated. A binomial form of regrowth data collection, percent seedling survival, was determined to be the most effi cient and most precise measure of evaluation. Induction of cold hardiness in very young seedlings and the use of a controlled freeze testing protocol should facilitate rapid screening of large progenies and improve the rate of progress in breeding for cold hardiness.

These plastics contribute to carbon emissions, represent 8% of the world’s annual petroleum use (4% production, 4% transportation), create disposal issues (20% of solid landfill wastes by volume), are expensive, and remain in the environment indefinitely. Due to the large costs of developing new chemistries, very few companies develop herbicides explicitly for ornamentals. However, companies do look at available chemistries for use in ornamentals and are constantly trying to develop the best strategy for each herbicide. The objectives of this study was to compare a new formulation of Dimension Ultra 2EW(dithiopyr, Dow AgroSciences) with and without a tank mix with Gallery (isoxaben, Dow AgroSciences) and Showcase (isoxaben+trifluralin+oxyfluorfen, Dow AgroSciences) to other granular and liquid formulations currently available for phytotoxicity and efficacy evaluations.

Herbicide selection depends on the weeds you are trying to control, the stage of the planting, the plant material in the planting and the stage of the weed growth. Other factors influencing herbicide selection include timing of the herbicide application, classification and persistence in the soil, the chemical mode-of-action, soil type, temperature, soil pH, organic matter content, available soil moisture, whether the weeds or crop plants are under stress, spray pattern, equipment calibration, chemical retention on leaf or soil surface, uptake in the weed, and spray water quality.
