We analyse the relationship between migration and inter-industry mobility using longitudinal microdata on 5,000 recent UK graduates who finished their studies in 2002/03, and who were surveyed 6 months and 3 ½ years after graduation. We define migration as a move of more than 15 km from the location of employment, and analyse the effects of a locational move in conjuction, or in the absence of, a change in industry. We allow for the possibility of selection bias, whereby unobservable characteristics may lead graduates to both change their location and/or industry, and earn a higher or lower salary, by estimating a treatment effects model with multinomial choice. Our results indicate that the effect on both earnings and career satisfaction of a change in location is positive, and there is a strong negative effect associated with changing both location and industry. The results also show that the subject of study is an important determinant of both migration choice and career outcomes for UK graduates.

Estimation of local employment growth: do sectoral aggregation and industry definition matter?, Regional Studies. Over the last two decades, numerous attempts have been made to explain the determinants of local growth, with as yet little overall consensus. The aim of this paper is to reveal a potential problem of parameter heterogeneity in growth regressions associated with the use of data at different levels of aggregation. Using Italian data and focusing on both manufacturing and service industries, it is shown how different empirical outcomes can be generated from exactly the same spatial units simply by changing the levels of sectoral aggregation. Moreover, the results point to some advantages associated with using more disaggregated data.

In particular, many have recognised the difficulty in capturing the role that digital technologies play within the creative industries. Digital technologies are embedded in the production and market structures of the creative industries and are also partially 2 distinct and discernible from it. This paper unfolds the role played by digital technologies focusing on a key aspect of its development: human capital. Using student micro-data collected by the Higher Education Statistical Agency (HESA) in the United Kingdom, we investigate the characteristics and location determinants of digital graduates. The paper deals specifically with understanding whether digital skills in the UK are equally embedded across the creative industries, or are concentrated in other sub-sectors. Furthermore, it explores the role that these graduates play in each sub-sector and their financial rewards. Findings suggest that digital technology graduates tend to concentrate in the software and gaming sub-sector of the creative industries but also are likely to be in embedded creative jobs outside of the creative industries. Although they are more likely to be in full-time employment than part-time or self-employment, they also suffer from a higher level of unemployment.

While the results of this question are important, it does not answer whether there are cultural avoidance effects in which domestic migrants avoid states with high stocks of past immigrants. The answer to this question would suggest non-labour market responses to immigrants. In assessing the cultural avoidance issue, we examine whether domestic migration ...

Skilled migration across international borders is an increasingly important dynamic that can impact regional labour markets and influence regional development. The federal government operates a graduate visa scheme that has resulted in a marked increase in the number of overseas graduates staying-on in Australia post-graduation. However, little research has been undertaken investigating their employment outcomes nor to analyse the patterns of inter-regional migration within the nation in entering the labour force. This paper addresses that issue using survey data which enables the analysis and comparison of ‘before’ and ‘after’ patterns of regional distribution of those immigrants as they transition from being students to entering employment. Their working conditions and spatial patterns of location as students and as...

In particular as more and more cities claim their creative and cultural value, it is important to consider what role can higher education (HE) play in shaping and fostering creative city. The work of Florida (2002) has put emphasis on the role of universities in regional economic development as providers of talent. Taking in consideration this broader literature about the HEIs contribution to local and national economies, the present paper ...
