When compared to other Asian countries HIV arrived in Sri Lanka somewhat later. So far, only 1597 HIV cases (of which 950 are males and 647 females), 275 AIDS deaths, 56 children (mother to child transmission) have been officially reported among Sri Lankan nationals by the National HIV/AIDS Control Board as at end of September 2012. Number of HIV tests carried out during 2011, were 387,251 and HIV sero-positivity rate for 2011 was 0.04%.

Therefore, using the media to transmit ARN's advocacy messages allows us to reach a wide audience that will influence public opinion and advance our goals. In order to address the potential social, economic and environmental impact of the Kaladan Project and to enable its benefits to be distributed equitably, Myanmar needs a democratic system of governance in which people can voice their concerns without fearing persecution. We believe without this, the Kaladan Project must not go forward. That is the strong message we are giving to the Myanmar Rules, International Community, UN Bodies and other stakeholders.
