Okay, so, I keep being asked to do an episode on polygamy. So let’s.
I’m going to make a case in this episode that the Qur’anic verses on polygamy when read together actually prohibit polygamy, rather than permitting it – it’s just not an explicit prohibition. The permission doesn’t apply to just any random man, and the attention to and the context of orphans is quite crucial to what the text seems to be saying.
I’ll be using the word polygyny in this video a lot. Polygamy is a general word that refers to the practice of having multiple spouses, of any gender. Polygyny is the practice of having multiple wives. Polyandry is the practice of having multiple husbands.
