AEGIS-OA (Activate European Guidance and Incentives for Sustainable Open Access publishing), a new EU-funded project under the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, officially kicked off on 19-20 March 2026 in Brussels. The project aims to strengthen a transparent, sustainable, and high-quality open access scholarly publishing ecosystem in Europe by building on and expanding the services of the European Diamond Capacity Hub (EDCH), a program hosted by OPERAS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The initiative brings together a consortium of 24 partners from 16 European countries, including 14 beneficiary partners and 10 associated partners. This broad partnership includes research-performing organisations, service providers, and National Capacity Centres with strong expertise in institutional publishing, Diamond Open Access, and Open Science. Together, they will work to reinforce community-led publishing models and improve coordination across disciplines, institutions, and national contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A central ambition of AEGIS-OA is to broaden the scope of Diamond Open Access support in Europe by integrating books alongside journals. Recognising the importance of monographs and edited volumes in scholarly communication, the project will help extend existing standards and frameworks to better support open access books. This includes work on adapting the Diamond Open Access Standard to books and contributing to the development of certification approaches that can promote quality, trust, and visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another important area of work is the enhancement of tools and services connected to the EDCH. AEGIS-OA will build on results from previous EU-funded projects such as DIAMAS, CRAFT-OA, and PALOMERA, with the goal of refining and scaling existing resources rather than duplicating efforts. This includes improving discovery and service infrastructures, as well as supporting practical, ready-to-use publishing solutions aligned with EDCH objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the coming months, more information about AEGIS-OA will be made available through the EDCH website and communication channels. As the project develops, it promises to become an important step forward for equitable, community-led scholarly publishing in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
