{"id":288,"date":"2011-10-17T16:04:31","date_gmt":"2011-10-17T16:04:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/opencitations.wordpress.com\/?p=288"},"modified":"2022-08-04T13:11:49","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T11:11:49","slug":"the-five-stars-of-online-journal-articles-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opencitations.hypotheses.org\/288","title":{"rendered":"The Five Stars of Online Journal Articles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many people will be familiar with Tim Berners-Lee&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/DesignIssues\/LinkedData.html\">five stars of linked data<\/a>, categorising the publication of data on the web in levels of increasing usefulness. \u00a0To complement these, I wish to propose <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>Five Stars of Online Journal Articles, <\/strong>in particular to characterize the potential for improvement to the primary medium of scholarly communication made possible by web technologies, including the semantic publishing approaches I have recommended and exemplified in recent <a href=\"http:\/\/imageweb.zoo.ox.ac.uk\/pub\/2011\/presentations\/\">presentations<\/a>, blog posts and papers [1-5].<\/p>\n<p>While Tim\u2019s five stars of linked data are hierarchical, all relating to the same thing and each building on the preceding one, the five stars of online journal articles shown in the diagram below are complementary, forming a constellation arranged along five independent axes within a multi-dimensional publishing universe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/opencitations.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/five-stars-of-online-journal-articles.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-289 alignleft\" title=\"Five stars of online journal articles\" src=\"http:\/\/opencitations.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/five-stars-of-online-journal-articles.png\" alt=\"Five stars of online journal articles Diagram\" width=\"640\" height=\"552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/opencitations.hypotheses.org\/files\/2011\/10\/five-stars-of-online-journal-articles.png 787w, https:\/\/opencitations.hypotheses.org\/files\/2011\/10\/five-stars-of-online-journal-articles-300x259.png 300w, https:\/\/opencitations.hypotheses.org\/files\/2011\/10\/five-stars-of-online-journal-articles-500x431.png 500w, https:\/\/opencitations.hypotheses.org\/files\/2011\/10\/five-stars-of-online-journal-articles-768x663.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2605<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 Peer review\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Ensure your your article is peer reviewed, to provide assurance of its scholarly value, quality and integrity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2605<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 Open Access\u00a0 <\/strong>Ensure others have cost-free open access to your published article, to ensure its greatest possible usefulness and readership.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2605<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 Enriched content\u00a0 <\/strong>Use the full potential of web technologies and web standards to provide interactivity and semantic enrichment to the content of your online article.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2605\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Available datasets\u00a0 <\/strong>Ensure that all the data supporting the results you report are fully published under an open license, with sufficient metadata to enable their re-interpretation and reuse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2605\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Machine-readable metadata\u00a0 <\/strong>Publish machine-readable metadata describing both your article <em>and<\/em> your cited references, so that these can be discovered automatically.<\/p>\n<p>At present, many publishers primarily use the web simply as a cheap and convenient distribution medium for PDF documents that are essentially electronic facimiles of the printed page, ignoring the Web\u2019s greater potential. \u00a0The Five Stars of Online Journal Articles proposed here encapsulate a richer vision. Each star is highly desirable in its own right, but it is only by achieving them all in combination that we will really advance scholarly communication.\u00a0 Of course, the degree of achievement along each of these publishing axes can vary, analogous to the different stars within the constellation shining with varying luminosities.<\/p>\n<p>So I want you to ask yourself:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>\u201cHow do my online journal articles rate against these five stars?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As an exercise in \u2018drinking my own champagne\u2019, I have evaluated references [1] to [4] against the five stars, and present those results, together with a full explanation of the five-point evaluation scale for each star, in an article [6] for which this blog post is summary.\u00a0 Here, to give you a flavour of that, I show the evaluations for Reis <em>et al<\/em>.
