Incorporated as a soliciting not-for-profit in Canada in 2024, OpenBuilding, Inc. consists of a Director Tier and an Advisor Tier. As required by Corporations Canada, we have three voting director-members, and a group of non-voting, non-member technical advisors. Originally funded from a public sponsorship grant from the Ontario Association of Architects to develop and advance education around the excel-based TEUI 3 energy and carbon modelling framework, OpenBuilding has continued to advance OBJECTIVE TEUI4, a free and open-source full-stack web-application that is designed to support architects in early-stage (napkin sketch) energy modelling to improve building performance outcomes across Canada. All director/members and advisors are currently volunteers, with an aim of seeking additional grants to fund staff (directors and advisors) and programs from 2025-2030. Our immediate goal is to complete 200 case studies of buildings from across Canada, validated by utility bills, to further enhance OBJECTIVE’s performance targeting capabilities, while supporting the practice of Architecture and Engineering to the highest levels. We have 1 annual AGM (May, 2025, May 2026, etc), and 4-quarterly zoom meetings to track progress and develop partnerships. Volunteer participation in OpenBuilding activities is 100% interest and capacity-driven. We place no additional burden of meetings or tasks on members beyond this. Once we are adequately funded, we intend to convert Director and Advisor roles to staff positions.
