Lukasz started his career as a freelance web developer, in 2004 he joined Mouton Interactive, a multimedia agency from Poland. In the meantime he finished masters degree in the field of Computer Science at The University of Podlasie. After finishing his studies he moved to UK, where he joined THUK Online Marketing.

In June 2008 he has been delving into the world of PhD research on privacy rights management for mobile applications. Lukasz joined PRiMMA project, research team at The Open University, where he's trying to explore the role of feedback in privacy management for mobile applications and experiment with new interaction methods for expressing privacy preferences.

His research interest lies at the intersection of Interaction Design, Mobile Applications, Context-Awareness, Location Based Services, Privacy and Environmental Psychology. His main goal is to bring knowledge from different disciplines together in order to provide a natural user experience while using context-aware mobile applications.

Lukasz's research on usable privacy controls was published in SOUPS (Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security) and Mobile HCI (International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction with Mobile Devices and Services) conferences, his work on haptic interfaces was also reported in The New Scientist and Tech Crunch eu blog.

As an active member of PRiMMA research team, Lukasz was involved in several research activities (systems design, development, user studies, interviews, focus groups), he co-authored research papers on privacy in mobile applications published in top conferences, i.e. CHI, UbiComp.

After successfully defending his PhD thesis "Supporting Location Privacy Management through Feedback and Control" dr Łukasz Jędrzejczyk moved back to Poland.

Currently dr Łukasz works as Head of New Product Development and leads the development of financial systems and products.

His goal for the next few years is to redefine and popularize mobile payments industry. Research in progress...

Supporting location privacy management through feedback and control

How can we best explore the range of users' reactions when developing future technologies tha... more How can we best explore the range of users' reactions when developing future technologies that maybe controversial, such as personal healthcare systems? Our approach – Contravision – uses futuristic videos, or other narrative forms, that convey either negative or positive aspects of the proposed technology for the same scenarios. We conducted a users study to investigate what range of responses the different versions elicited. Our findings show that the use of two systematically comparable representations of the same technology can elicit a wider spectrum of reactions than a single representation can. We discuss why this is so and the value of obtaining breadth in user feedback for potentially controversial technologies.

Our work focuses on ways in which real-time feedback affects people's behaviour in order to identify the main criteria for acceptance of this technology. Based on the data from a three week field trial of Buddy Tracker, a focus group session, and interviews, we found that when using a system that provided real-time feedback, people were more accountable for their actions and reduced the number of unreasonable location requests. We have used the results of our study to propose high-level design criteria for incorporating real-time feedback into information sharing applications in a manner that ensures social acceptance of the technology.

A growing body of research has been exploring the use of control mechanisms to address the privac... more A growing body of research has been exploring the use of control mechanisms to address the privacy concerns raised by location-tracking technology. We report on a qualitative study of two family groups who used a custom-built tracking application for an extended period of time. Akin to sociological breaching experiments, the study focuses on the interferences between location tracking and relationship management. We analyze the tensions that can arise between affordances of the technology and uses that the contracts between family members legitimize. We describe how, by fostering misperceptions and 'nudging' behaviors, location-tracking technology can generate anxieties and conflicts even in close relationships. We discuss their vulnerability to the overreaching effects of tracking, against which the use of mechanisms such as location-sharing preferences and feedback may not be socially viable.

Predators and Prey: Ubiquitous Tracking, Privacy and the Social Contract

Previous work examining privacy interfaces and user attitudes towards location tracking have reli... more Previous work examining privacy interfaces and user attitudes towards location tracking have relied on irregular manual updates from users, imprecise location information or information obtained via specialized equipment. We present a field study where 12 participants used their own mobile phones with automatic accurate location tracking over a 3-week period. We recorded over 1000 user tracking events, over 300 extended experience sampling entries and more than 15 hours of debriefing interviews. Taking an evolutionary perspective on location tracking, we observe how predator-prey dynamics interact with the social contracts that define our relationships and present a threetire framework accounting for the complexity of users' responses to location tracking technology. We also discuss how the limitations of the technology currently available contribute to misperceptions and misinterpretations impacting on an individual's social interactions and how ubiquitous location tracking encroaches on the individual's fundamental need to safely withdraw from social interaction.
