Flying Vipers - Off World

Off World, the third LP from Flying Vipers, is arriving this April on Easy Star Records!

From the album title to the back illustration, there are some deep-rooted connections to the Glyos System, and we have a few fun things planned for later this year as well.

The second single, "Believers & Deceivers", dropped today on all streaming platforms, and the album can be pre-ordered now on vinyl and cassette.

Many thanks to my brother Matt for helping us flesh out the Vipers in-world look from day one, and to the community crossover support over the past decade!

Flying Vipers x Easy Star Records

Back in 2015, my brother JBo and I started a studio side project to release a cassette of lofi music we had made with a friend. No demos, no rehearsing, just hit record on the tape machine and see what happens. We asked the Big Guy over here to draw us a snake with wings, and the Flying Vipers were born.

Today, that scrappy band – and that scribbled drawing – are still thriving, and we're excited to announce we've signed with Easy Star Records! Based out of NYC, some may know this label from their Dub Side of the Moon release, a full reggae version of Pink Floyd's masterwork LP. We loved it in college when it came out and have been supporters of their output since. To now be a part of their roster is one of those full-circle moments that we are incredibly thankful for.

Today is also Bandcamp Friday, and you can pre-order the new single digitally or on vinyl 7" directly from us, and Easy Star star will ship them next month.

Many thanks to those of you that have been supporting all my musical endeavors over the years - this is just the beginning of a new chapter, next Vipers LP is on deck for 2025!

Flying Vipers - Two Twenties Clash

New music and merch from Flying Vipers! Check out the single + shirt, or stream the track on your preferred platform.

It's been a minute since my last personal post, so if you happen to be new around here, I also operate a small indie label and play drums in a few bands. Check out the Music ADD tag to see some of the audio-visual connections spawned here over the years, find our playlists on Spotify or Apple, or take the plunge and nosedive into our discography if you're feeling daring.  -Marcus

Flying Vipers - Nervous Breakdub

On the 40th anniversary of its initial release, Flying Vipers pay tribute to the debut EP by hardcore/punk pioneers Black Flag. Their first 7" record, Nervous Breakdown, introduces the original line-up with 4 songs in 5 minutes. We've put our own spin on this iconic set, arranged as a single track, stripped down to bare bones drums & bass, and drenched with reverb and analog effects. Recorded and mixed direct to cassette tape over the span of a few hours.

Big thanks to our resident Viper artist, Big Boots MD, for reinterpreting the classic Raymond Pettibon illustration. More music – including our first full-length – coming later this year.

Flying Vipers - The Shadow Tape

The Flying Vipers have emerged from their den with another analog artifact. This one contains a few extended vocal tracks in the Jamaican Disco style.

In the mid 70s, "discomixes" became a popular way for DJs at clubs (discothèques) to showcase a new single followed by a dub remix, all on one side of a 12" 45 RPM record. This resulted in some amazing 7-8 minute tracks evolving a radio single into a dancehall hit. We wanted to pay tribute to this tradition, but since we recorded this direct to cassette (and pressing vinyl is crazy expensive), we thought the cassingle was a fun way to go.

Much respect to Jay Champany, who recorded and mixed everything, in addition to writing the lyrics and voicing the tracks. Big thanks to the Big Guy here as well for illustrating Viper #3.

Today is also Cassette Store Day, and this release is an official part of the Jump Up Records CSD line-up, which includes a few classic albums from my 90s heroes The Toasters and The Slackers. They've also re-issued a killer cover album of Michael Jackson tunes done in a dub reggae style that have been played quite a lot at Onell HQ over the years, especially their version of "Rock With You".

Hope some of you enjoy the tunes!

PS- New Englanders, Vipers support Jamaican legend Lee "Scratch" Perry on 10/24 in Boston!

Vipers in Boston

Quick update from MADD HQ:

Flying Vipers play show #2 this Friday in Boston. We're supporting Big D and the Kids Table as they play through their album Strictly Rude, 10 years after it's debut. Going back another 10 years, I was a high schooler rocking out to the very first Big D album, Shot by Lammi. Nowadays we're friends and even share band members... Boston is tight like that.

Portsmouth zine The Sound also just posted an article and interview on our latest, The Copper Tape. That's it below, featuring a tiny scribble I made that Matt turned into a glorious scribble.

Lots more happening in the coming months, including a couple new vinyl releases... stay tuned.

Flying Vipers - The Copper Tape

New sounds from the Flying Vipers! Instrumental dub in the classic Jamaican style, produced using the latest in cassette recording technology.

The artwork was once again delivered by Dark Santa, aka the Beard Lord or simply, Matt. Thanks Brojack!

This follows up last year's tape, with a heavier focus on drum & bass. And lots more trippy, drippy effects.

And more cowbell.

Bonus: One of these tunes is ripped from an old Sega game circa '92. The box art featured a painting by Clyde Caldwell... first to name that cartridge wins a free download!

Enjoy!

The Flying Vipers

New tunes! Today marks the surprise release from Flying Vipers, a new lo-fi dub project my brother and I started as a spin-off from Destroy Babylon. We recorded the whole thing just as we did with our first bands in the 90s... direct to cassette tape. Listen and download here!

One of these tunes has a special connection to a certain Glyos Passcode. It was first released by another moniker of ours, the Arcade Rats, and eventually re-recorded using live instruments. The song has changed slightly, but the core rhythms and progressions are there... can anyone spot which song? For those into chiptunes, the B-side of the cassette has a special treat for you.

A big thanks to Matt for helping out with the art and creating the Viper illustration featured on the cover. He even inspired me to break out my own pens for the first time in quite a while, and I ended up drawing the pad print for the cassettes. And for the record, there are two working tape decks at Onell headquarters that still get played in the barn and the attic!

Hope you guys enjoy the tunes and the remaining weeks of the summer!
