Ian's Undead - June Leader Month

"The world is a vampire
Sent to drain
Secret destroyers
Hold you up to the flames
And what do I get
For my pain?
Betrayed desires
And a piece of the game"

       - Smashing Pumpkins, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, 1995

I chose June as my leader month as it's the end of the school year and, as a teacher,  it's usually quite a busy time for me. Also, getting rid of the bigger stuff in the previous months gave me a lot more time to complete this simple task... I only had to paint the 2 miniatures left from my initial list : a vampire and a liche.

After two weeks I didn't like at all where I was going with those two and decided to change for a mounted vampire. A bit less old school but nevertheless a fine addition to my army. I wanted to try something I've never done to paint the sword to make it stand out from a simple steel or rusted one. I wanted a magical sword that looked like a magical sword. So I went on you tube and found this tutorial from Juan Hidalgo, which I like a lot. I am satisfied with the result but I hope to make it better next time.

I still had some time so I added a last miniature: a Blood Dragon vampire. I wanted to try a metallic red armour and a new pattern for a magical sword on this one (tutorial here). I also used oil paint for the first time. I am not happy with the result but, again, it's trials and errors and I hope I will fare better next time!

Filippo's Undead - Introduction OWAC VII

"Awake O Dead, for there can be no rest for ye beneath the earth. Let the splintered bones burrow from the grave pall. Let cold fingers grip time-worn blades, and unseeing eyes survey the fields of slaughter. For your time has come once more. And the dead shall walk."

July 1997, White Dwarf 211 Cover by Mark Gibbons

26 years later, OWAC VII, it's time to start again from the beginning

Undead are the perfect "bad guys" be a movie or a RPG. They were my first army and I still hate myself for selling it all a long time ago.

I started collecting again when I discovered this contest, and after 3 years I may have exaggerated again..

So, in this edition I will enter two Tier lists.

BRING FORTH THE ARMY OF DARKNESS

TIER I
This list is the base project for this edition. 2000 points Undead following the 4th edition rules.

Thanks to the magic of Contrast paints I believe this will be an easy task, with the exceptions of the characters and the insane idea of freehands on each shield!

TIER II
WILL
FINISH
EVERYTHING

No more unpainted Undead models, no more pile of shame.. at least for Warhammer Fantasy

This is almost my entire collection, spanning from the 4th to 6th edition.

It's almost impossible, but I'll give it a try.

See you in January

Ian's Undead - introduction post - OWAC VII

Life is pleasant, Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome.

    - Isaac Asimov

I'm Ian from Montreal, Canada. The 7th edition of The Old World Army Challenge will be my third participation. I did a small Goblin army for OWAC V and 4 Mordheim Warbands for the special edition of OWAC VI where specialty games were allowed.

I had a few options for the 2024 challenge, having accumulate a pretty nice pile of shame over the last 5 years (when I got back into the hobby after a 30 years hiatus) : Chaos Dwarfs, Undead, more Goblins, Dogs of War… I decided to go with Undead, having already painted a nice little army which the challenge will permit me to growth and improve.

Due to personal reasons, I am presently switching every week between my house and an apartment. It will be quite a challenge to bring my painting stuff from one place to the other to achieve my goals… It’s part of the reasons I opted for the Undead as there’s a lot of skeletons and they’re pretty quick to paint.

Here's the army I would like to paint in the next six months. I’m not aiming for anything effective or competitive, the sole purpose being having fun by reducing my pile of undead shame while achieving each month objective. Army list and points are mostly based on the 4th edition Undead army book.

If everything goes according to plans, here’s every month objective. I am sure it will change though, depending on my mood and time available:

January

20 Skeletons with spear and shield – 200 points (4th)
2 Undead chariots with scythed wheels, 1 crew with bow– 156 points (4th)
10 Dire wolves – just extra work as they are not in 3rd/4th edition
3 Vampire bats – just extra work as they are not in 3rd/4th edition

February

20 Skeletons with hand weapon – 160 points (4th)
20 Ghouls – 160 points (4th)

March

6 Skeleton horsemen, light armour, shield, lance – 168 points (4th)

April

9 Skeletons horsemen, light armour, shield, lance – 252 points (4th)

May

1 Vampire lord on skeleton steed, heavy armour –  380 points (4th)

June - Wildcard month

1 Black Coach – Extra work as it's not in 3rd/4th edition
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's the complete army list, without any magic items/weapons, banners...:

20 Skeletons with spear and shield – 200 points
20 Skeletons with hand weapon – 160 points
2 Undead chariots with scythed wheels, 1 crew with bow– 156 points
10 Dire wolves
3 Vampire bats
20 Ghouls – 160 points
15 Skeleton horsemen, light armour, shield, lance – 420 points
1 Vampire lord on skeleton steed, heavy armour –  380 points
1 Black Coach

Total : 1476 points (not counting Dire Wolves, Vampire Bats and Black Coach)

Paul M's High Elf Host (part the second) - OWAC VI Intro post

So.... this was me at the end of the last OWAC. Look how smug and self satisfied I am!

This is what I announced back in July 2022:

"Here is what I still have to go before I'm 'finished' with my High Elf Host:

22 Caledor Archers, inc. full command (refurbished unit)

22 Yvresse Archers, inc full command (refurbished unit)

22 Lothern Archers, inc full command

2 Caledor themed Repeater Bolt Throwers

10 Silver helms, inc full command

2 Mounted Heroes

Mounted Mage

Mage on foot

BSB on foot

20 Phoenix Guard (Dragon Guard?)

Phoenix/Dragon Guard Hero on foot (converted from a metal Charioteer)

2 Chariots (both older metal ones, but one Tiranoc themed, and one Chrace themed)

Newer edition of Imrik on Dragon"

(listen, it gets worse...)

"That's more than enough for another OWAC, but I really don't want to do High Maintenance Elves two years in a row, so I'm going to try and blitz that before the end of the year and focus on something else for OWAC VI. Wish me luck!"

Actually, Mr. Narrator, that is not entirely true, but I certainly didn't paint any more high Maintenance Elves for the rest of the year... until this very week when I finally got my arse in gear and started on those refurbished archer units as a warm up for OWAC VI.

I also said this back in July:

"I've still got stuff to paint and I need the adrenaline and risk of humiliation amongst my peers! It just isn't the same without it!"

I was right about that at least! I'm delighted to be back for what will be my fourth OWAC having previously completed a Nurgle Beastman army for OWAC II and a Border Princes force for OWAC III as well as last years High Elves. It really is the mainstay and highlight of my hobby calendar and I can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with! :D

Having eaten some crow, and also having already painted my Battle Masters minis as part of my Border Princes force, I will be keeping things traditional despite this being the year of the OWAC Special Edition. Here then is my starting list for OWAC VI:

22 Lothern Archers, inc full command

3 Yvresse Archer command

2 Caledor themed Repeater Bolt Throwers

10 8 Silver helms, inc full command

2 1 Mounted Heroes

Mounted Mage

Mage on foot

BSB on foot (converted from a metal Charioteer)

20 Phoenix Guard (Dragon Guard?)

2 Chariots (both older metal ones, but one Tiranoc themed, and one Chrace themed... but not with lions)

Newer edition of Imrik on Dragon

Here are some pictures of (most of) the minis with seasonal December frost for dating purposes:

The eagle eyed among you will spot a problem. Some of my units already have partly painted bases! OWAC rules indicate that bases can be prepared/textured/undercoated, but there shouldn't be any colour on the models. I'm very grateful to Overlord Iannick for allowing this one time only exception to the rules (and only on the basis that they were legitimately based up within last year's OWAC, but were a stretch goal to far at the time) and will be adopting a self imposed penance of having to paint one whole extra mini as part of the monthly minimum for every 5 pre-painted bases used (so on average I will be painting 12 minis instead of the minimum 10)

And this is the second chariot that I new I had but couldn't find until this morning- phew!

And this cheeky chap is going to be the Overlord's Offering (High Elf refurb units WIP in the background not part of OWAC VI) :)

It's a Goblin Vampire (B) from Macrocosm's Bonefields line, although I think it could do excellent double duty as both an alternate Vampire or Goblin Shaman in WFB, or even a Werebat in D&D :)

I think that just about does it for now. Time to read everyone else's intro posts now and get all sweaty and excited about your OWAC VI projects ;)

Good luck all!

Steve's Velorene Haufen (Forlorn Hope) - Rank and File #4 (632 Points)

Captain Lukas Heinriksen quailed as Todeswunsch pulled the letter he had but two hours ago written, sealed and pressed in to the hand of a loyal runner. The paper was torn and judging by the bloody stains, the runner had met a sorry end too. Todeswunsch tossed the ripped missive on to the table before him and stared coldly at Heinriksen,

"I see you are not enamoured of the new additions to our little expedition Captain. Not only that but it would seem you seek to share your views with our masters back in Ostermark. Would you care to explain yourself..."

Well! Good to be back after a month off and hopefully this is a triumphant (or at least as triumphant as a couple of units of pathetic peasant levies can be!) return...

This month I had hoped to finish off most of the remaining rank and file units I have for this army but time has not been my friend yet again. My leader may have some company next month! First up is Todeswunch's infamous Death's Head Regiment, led by his newfound and somewhat dubious Sylvanian ally, Count Karnstein. There are those who whisper that the Count is not Human, that he is well versed in the ways of the Necromancer and that the ranks of the regiment he commands come from the grave...

Kurt Todeswunsch eyed his Captain coldly as the man stammered out his objections,

"So you feel my ideas, my methods have become unsound... Unsound. Well, you see Heinriksen... In this war, things get confused out here, power, ideals, the old morality, and practical military necessity. Out here with these natives it can be a temptation to be god. Because there's a conflict in every human heart between the rational and the irrational, between  good and  evil. The  good does not always triumph. Sometimes the dark side overcomes what those in more comfortable positions call the better angels of our nature. Every man has got a breaking point. You and I have. And you think I have reached mine. And very obviously, you think me insane. That my command should be terminated..."

Heinriksen lowered his head, unable to meet the gaze of his superior officer,

"Sir with the greatest of respect... how can your judgement be sound? There are heretics and those touched with the taint of Chaos amidst our ranks. The men think you in league with Necromancers and that the Dead fight alongside them... You are out here operating without any decent restraint. Totally beyond the pale of any acceptable human conduct..."

The miniatures are a mix of several different manufacturers as usual! The zombified French soldiers and Castle Guards from Studio Miniatures are great fun.

I threw in a few kitbashes from various Perry Miniatures sprues with some zombie bits to make up the numbers.

Of course I had to include these lovely Landsknecht Zombies from the Assault Group.

And a bunch of Crooked Dice Husks rounded the unit of nicely!

A humourless smile stretched Todeswunch's features in to a rictus-like grin,

"I shall let this insubordination slide Captain this once and let you in to a little secret. A great man once told me -  I have considered all the works that are under the sun, and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of the spirit, but who believes it till Death tells it us? It is therefore Death alone that can suddenly make a man know himself. Oh eloquent, just and mighty Death! Whom none could advise, thou hast persuaded; what none hath dared, thou hast done; and whom all the world hath flattered, thou only hath cast out of the world and despised; thou hast drawn together all the far-fetched greatness, all the pride, cruelty, and ambition of man, and covered it all over with these two narrow words; Hic jacet! Do you recognise those two words Captain? You should for they adorn a great many grave stones - Here Lies - and this is the reason I have it as my motto.

No I worship not Death and nor do I fear it. I do, however, respect it for this reason and take heed of the lessons it offers. Keep your Gods and your servile bowing and scraping, for Death laughs even at Morr who is but a pale imitation. We will never win here in Sylvania, with all the forces of Death and Undeath ranged against us. At least those mad fools we harry and chase about the place realise that. At least there is a grain of truth in the teachings of that Cult of theirs… You look surprised to hear me in agreement with the heretics when it is you who hold more in common with them than I. Your adoration of what you believe to be a superior and omnipotent God, which is but a poor masquerade for Death comes from the same fear and impotence as those poor wretches, who have fallen under the sway of some Demon who wears the face of Death. You both welcome and seek consolation in the oblivion that that naked and absolute power promises you. It is an escape from the realisation that within your flesh is not one point of firm stability, nor in your bones there is no steadfastness: such is your dread of mutability and change, success and failure, death and life."

The Captain listened on - whether to a madman or a wise one, he knew not.

I figured if the Imperial Guard can have Penal Troops in Rogue Trader then why shouldn't my evil Empire army. I hope to paint up some handlers to shepherd them in to battle before the end of the challenge...

The banner features detail taken from Breughel's Fall of the Rebel Angels - I figured his depiction of Lucifer's rebels as weird and wonderful creatures, as opposed to the more traditional angels who are harrying them out of Heaven, fit quite nicely with the idea of horrible mutations from the taint of Chaos.

Looks pretty Choatic to me!!

The text is taken from Revelations 14:11 and reads:

And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.

A chill wind buffeted the tent and the candle flames guttered, sending crazed shadows wheeling about the two men who sat opposite each other across the table. Todeswunsch paid them no mind and went on,

"I've seen horrors...horrors that you've seen. But you have no right to call me a traitor. You have a right to kill me. You have a right to do that...But you have no right to judge me. It's impossible for words to describe what is necessary to those who do not know what horror means.  Horror. Horror has a face...And you must make a friend of horror. Horror and moral terror are your friends. If they are not then they are enemies to be feared. They are truly enemies. We have to be as strong as them, as the monsters, Heinriksen, or judgement will defeat us. Besides, out here the boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins?

You will address the men Heinriksen and set their minds at ease. The mutants have their handlers, Karnstein alone commands his regiment and we are but few against the threats ranged against us. Any man who still objects to the nature of our reinforcements is welcome to fend for himself..."

Again I've used a fair mix of miniatures - this lot are from the wonderfulk Dunkeldorf range. So glad they decided to make some mutants!

As the flavour of this army is very much in line with Heironymous Bosch and Brueghel's weirder paintings, I had to include some of Eureka Miniature's fantastic Chaos Army - directly inspired by these two great painters! The Goat Man is from Northumbrian Tin Soldier's lovely Night Folk range.

The (twisted) backbone of the unit, however, comes from the wonderful Midlam Miniatures and their Cult of the Chosen! Peasants with tentacles erupting all over the place - just what I needed!

Heinriksen stumbled from the General's tent, having been dismissed. His head reeling, he found himself going over a verse of an old poem he half remembered,

"Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity."

Did Todeswunsch represent the best or worst of humanity - Heinriksen was dismayed to find he no longer knew...

Well that'll do for this month - hopefully real life will be a bit more forgiving and allow me to tie up a few loose ends as well as getting my leader painted next month...

25 Zombies - Die Schale 512 Points
L10 Vampire Hero, light armour, spears, musician and standard

20 Penal Mutants (Peasant Levy) - Die Sünderinnen                 120 Points

Jesse's undead (460 points)

A lot of stuff remains unfinished on the painting table so it is just a small offering for May. One  Vrolka (Level 5 Vampire - 330pts) and his retinue of 10 skeleton warriors (130). I enjoyed painting the vampire (after a giving up a few times after some struggles with the hands of all things). The skeletons were fine the and rest of the unit will be quick as they are almost finished already.

The vampire looks like a mix of Noseferatu and Gargamel, which I quite like.

To finish where I want next month I have to sort the remaining 9 skeletons for this unit, paint another unit of 16 Nippon undead, one death rider, a corpse cart and something for the overlord. At this stage I feel that this is a little ambitious but it is worth a try.

Dave's Voracious Vampire Lord (375 points)

The first and indeed only mention of the name Kravag in the township ledgers of Messinghof is in the late twenty-second century. An odd name, even for an odd and mercifully forgotten corner of the Empire, one Kravag was born to a Yarognev the Younger. The unconventional name "Kravag," by rough approximation, meant "evil" or "ill-starred" in the crude dialect of the benighted eastern peasantry. The last of thirteen offspring, Kravag's birth on Hexensnacht eve, 2178, is the same date as his mother's death, indicating her death during or shortly after childbirth.

No further note is made of this insignificant figure, and it is impossible to say whether this is the same Kravag that appears many years later in the whispered folklore of Sylvania. Kravag the Voracious, it is said, was once a Hogmonger's slave and son. Whipped and beaten, Kravag was treated differently than his six brothers and six sisters, each of whom was doted upon by their father. Every evening, this gargantuan swineherd and his twelve portly children supped on magnificent meals of beer and porkpie, stuffed eggs, boiled eel and braised greens with bacon. And every night, for dessert, they would gorge on plums in sweet wine. Kravag, so the story goes, was left to shiver in the the pigsty, being forbidden from the dinner table of his kin. The poor wastrel, starved half-way to a skeleton, survived on what mere scraps remained when the Hogmonger sent one of his paunchy progeny to throw the evening's rubbish to the swine. Even then, being scarcely six stone in heft, young Kravag could barely compete with  the dozen or so ponderous sows that each measured ten times his weight or more. What little he could find of the leavings once the swine had finished with the bulk of it, Kravag could never find even a trace of the sweet wine and plums that he yearningly smelled wafting from the farmhouse each night.

Now if superstitious peasant tales are to be believed—and they most certainly are not—young Kravag's fate changed one night when a gaunt, terrible figure stalked out of the evening shadows towards the pigpen. Before the boy's eyes, the hideous creature sprang upon a young hog and rent its flesh, gorging on its very lifeblood. Only when the glutton's belly was full of swine blood did it notice the meek, terrified child peering at it from the dark corner of the stockade. At first the monster bared its wicked teeth and it seemed as if its fangs doubled in length. Kravag squeezed his eyes shut as tightly as he could in fear, but did not scream, for even at such a precious young age, he knew this death would be superior to even a moment more in his wretched life. Heavy heartbeats passed and yet death did not come to the pitiful child. Slowly, he opened one eye, then the other, until he was again staring at the beast. The figure had barely moved from his position gazing upon the child, hunched over the mangled sow. Then, to Kravag's surprise, the creature coughed, specks of black blood appearing on its sallow lips. In the pale moonlight, the beast looked different now... no longer vigorous and hale, but rather infirm and dying. The creature spoke in a slow, halting, heavy accent, as if it had not used its tongue in countless years but to lap up blood like an animal.

"For ages I have roamed the mountainside, chased from my home and hunted. I was royalty, ruling over my sheep. At Hel Fenn, I was awash in the blood of mortals. Now I feast on rodents and cattle... for too long, I have feared discovery and shunned hunting the cobbled streets and country roads that are my birthright. It has weakened me and now I am dying. But my line will not die. If I cannot rule again, then my lineage will after me."

It was then that the monster gave Kravag the blood kiss, before transforming one last time into a monstrous winged creature and flying off into the night sky. Within a moment, the memories of past royalty, the Aristocracy of the Night, flooded the boy's consciousness, and his darkest desires were transformed into a hideous plot.

The next night, when Kravag's portly brother came to discard the remnants of the Hogmonger's supper to the pigs, he did not return to the farmhouse. The next day, when the brother did not appear at breakfast, the siblings convinced their father that he must have gone to town for more eggs. The next night, another brother disappeared while taking out the garbage. Again, the siblings convinced their father that he must have gone out early in the morning to the next town over for some eel. This grisly pattern continued, until the Swineherd had to send his daughters, one by one, night after night, to throw away the dreck. Finally, only the Yarognev remained, alone at his long table, set with places for thirteen. Much too afraid to step foot outside, the corpulent pig farmer now ate alone, course after course, until he came to the dessert—plums in a sweet, sticky wine. As he reached for his spoon, he saw another figure sitting directly across from him at the far end of the table. It was Kravag... but he was different. Larger, more brawny, the usually-stooped child appeared to be at least as tall as his heavyset father if not indeed taller now.

"Is that... is that the plums in wine?" A familiar, yet eerily twisted voice croaked from the figure. Golden eyes peered sharply at the silver bowl. The old farmer held up the bowl shakily, as if to offer it in full to the intruder. A moment later, the sinister figure towered over the hefty Swineherd, reaching towards his offering with a long, clawed hand. The Hogmonger was frozen, eyes locked on the fulvous orbs that pierced his very soul. Motionless he sat as the hand extended past the silver bowl, slowly pushing its way into the farmer's fleshy chest, clasping an icy grip around his still-beating heart, and retracting with the purple, pumping organ, coated in sticky, red blood. Finally, Kravag the Voracious would have his plums and sweet wine.
