  • My Life and Times

I was born in 1939 BC.
    That’s ‘Before Computers’.

Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as

World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all… Archbishop Temple’s School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock ‘n’ Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during ‘The Cold War’…and then

I became ‘a family’. Which meant that I sort of missed the ‘swinging sixties’, but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the ‘Thatcher Years’ I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 60 years of happy marriage.

“We deserve better” … but … (continued)

Posted by Big John on July 15, 2020

Masks, face coverings, muzzles, call them what you like, the bunch of incompetent idiots running ruining this country suddenly think that they may help to protect us from the dreaded virus. At this rate it won’t be long before they go as far as to ‘nick’ you if you dare to leave home without wearing one. It wasn’t that long ago that ‘Bojo’ and his mates were telling us that we didn’t need them.

What next ? … Well don’t expect any ‘joined-up thinking’ or even good old common sense any time soon from the confused clowns who gave us a too late lockdown and are now opening up and throwing vast amounts of cash (which we don’t have) at some sort of crazy ‘lucky dip’ rescue plan, which they seem to think will help control the virus.

.. and not a “mad dog” in sight.

I live on the North Kent coast of England, just a few minutes walk from the sea. It’s a fairly peaceful place to live and the street where I reside sees few visitors. That was until yesterday when the bloke who looks after my garden was unable to park his vehicle anywhere near my house due to the large number of cars parked all over the bloody place!

He returned today and told me that he had never before seen so many people on our local beach as he had seen yesterday. So it would seem that, even, our tranquil…

Lives Matter … All of them !

Posted by Big John on June 11, 2020

During the recent protests in this country at the shocking death of a US citizen at the hands of an American police officer in the USA; it came as no surprise to me to see the amount of ignorance on display with regard to this country’s history, and in particular, the ‘slave trade’.

There has been plenty of ranting about the men who became rich, but not about the Africans who sold their fellow Africans to the European traders, or the significant part played by Britain in abolishing the slave trade and ending slavery in many parts of the world.

This isn’t the first time that there have been demands to remove statues, both here and in the USA. So, bearing this in mind, here is a copy of one of my posts from 2015 ….

“It goes without saying, that many of the people who made the British Empire so ‘Great’ were pretty unpleasant characters: but, having said that, it is almost impossible to judge them by today’s standards, which is what is happening in the case of the Cecil Rhodes’ statue.

Nearly every town and city in the UK has at least one statue of a ‘conquering hero’ posh pukka sahib or the like. Are they all to be removed ? If so, I suggest that we start with the upper class white supremacist colonialist who said that he was off to take part in …

… “a lot of jolly little wars against barbarous peoples” who had a “strong aboriginal propensity to kill” … “It was great fun galloping about.” … and personally killing at least three “savages” !

He wrote of his “irritation that Kaffirs should be allowed to fire on white men”, and demanded more conquests, based on his belief that “the Aryan stock is bound to triumph”.

He also declared that he was “strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes …[It] would spread a lively terror.”

He hated Indians stating that … “They are a beastly people with a beastly religion”. He also believed that “natives” were like helpless children who will “willingly, naturally, gratefully include themselves within the golden circle of an ancient crown” ..

So who was this great man ?.. No! .. It wasn’t Cecil Rhodes .. It was .. Winston Churchill” !

“We deserve better” … but …

… we ain’t going to get it !

In my post of 19th May I referred to ..  “the way that our so-called ‘leaders’ have handled matters” .. with regard to the Covid-19 pandemic; and, it would seem that there is a real possibility that things may get worse, because, as I see it, the dithering dimwits seem to think that they know better than the scientists and researchers who warn against the rush to relax the ‘lockdown’ precautions.

Just to illustrate that point …

The government … “Facemasks are not going to be mandated for general use by anyone leaving the house, nor are they recommended for exercising, schools, offices or other workplaces”.

A World Health Association study showed that nothing could provide complete protection, although  .. “facemasks have a strong shielding effect, reducing the risk of catching the virus by up to 85%” .. !

If you ever wanted proof of this ministerial incompetence and inconsistency, you have it in the latest ill-thought-out relaxation of the rules and the introduction of “Test and Trace”, which seems to have a number of technical, communication and “scammer” problems. Not to mention the fact that a vaccine does not exist to treat the person who has been traced.

Now I see that Health Secretary Matt Hancock has been accused by the UK Statistics Authority of telling ‘porkies’ when presenting testing statistics, as testing statistics “fall well short of expectations”.

No surprise there then. Just call him …

… “Misleading Matt”.

Caught in the act !

Posted by Big John on May 25, 2020

This is how my back yard garden normally looks around this time of the year. Unfortunately, this year, it has been neglected due to self isolation and the closure of garden centres and DIY stores. In fact it all looks a bit of a mess !  …

IMG_0006

Now last year I often found that my young red geraniums had been uprooted from their pots and the compost in which they had been carefully planted had been scattered all over the place. Obviously one of our local wildlife visitors was responsible, but which one ?

Well it wasn’t this sneaky looking fox or his mates, because this morning I looked out of the window and saw this little bugger ..

We deserve better !

Posted by Big John on May 19, 2020

In a number of my previous posts I have often referred to our parliamentarians and government ministers as .. “that bunch of self-serving hypocritical slippery chancers”, and in view of their current performance, when it come to the present ‘Covid19’ crisis, I would like to add “posturing plonkers” !

Incompetence does not even begin to describe the way that our so-called ‘leaders’ have handled matters, lied and then covered up the results.

When it comes to keeping the public informed, standing in front of the Union Flag, looking unhappy and leaning on a lectern bearing silly slogans which convey “the bleeding obvious” is, as far as I’m concerned, just a way of trying to look competent, before implementing the next ‘knee jerk reaction’ or displaying, on the TV news, yet another..

A faded memory.

Posted by Big John on May 8, 2020

Today is the 75th anniversary of ‘VE Day’ (Victory in Europe). I was there, although I don’t remember much about it, as I was only six years old at the time.

195 me (3)

However, I do have a few memories of those war years, such as the wail of air raid warning sirens, the boom of anti-aircraft guns, searchlights sweeping the skies, the drone of German V1 missiles and the question “Is it one of ours ?” whenever the sound of an aircraft engine was heard overhead. It was all part of everyday life for me; although I was a little too young to have experienced much of the fear that older children must have felt.

I have a vague memory of people celebrating and of a large bonfire burning across the street from our bomb damaged house. The fire was on an area of ruins and rubble where, once had stood ten families’ homes.

Where do they all come from ?

Posted by Big John on May 3, 2020

It’s ‘lockdown’ and the street where I live is deserted apart from the occasional vehicle, and these are mostly from supermarket delivery services or belong to some kind volunteer delivering groceries to one of my fellow grumpy old gits.

Hold on a minute ! .. that’s not quite true, because some family of lycra clad loonies has just pedalled passed my window narrowly missing a couple of joggers who were completely unaware of them because of all the ‘keep fit’ gadgets they were concentrating on and being made ‘soundproof’ by their wireless earbuds.

Now some old girl who was passing has just stopped to let her ugly little pooch crap on the grass verge next to my driveway. With a bit of luck the smartphone ‘zombie’ heading this way will tread in it and spill his coffee.

Oh! .. and before I forget, amongst a number of exercise ‘strollers’, were two old farts who were observing the ‘social distancing’ rule by tottering down the centre of the road, and one of them was using a ‘tri wheel walker’.

Earlier I saw a kid on a scooter, which makes me wonder how long it will be before I see a masked rider and hear the rumble of an approaching …

…  skateboard  ?
