  • My Life and Times

I was born in 1939 BC.
    That’s ‘Before Computers’.

Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as

World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all… Archbishop Temple’s School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock ‘n’ Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during ‘The Cold War’…and then

I became ‘a family’. Which meant that I sort of missed the ‘swinging sixties’, but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the ‘Thatcher Years’ I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 60 years of happy marriage.

“Confused ? .. You soon will be!”

Posted by Big John on November 1, 2020

Stephen Sondheim wrote a great song .. “Send In The Clowns” .. It’s one of my favourites .. Unfortunately it now reminds me of Barmy Boris and his clueless crew, whenever I hear the line .. “Don’t bother they’re here”.

I’m pretty sure that we are being controlled guided through this pandemic by some kind of ‘lucky dip’ procedure conjured up by ‘Risky Rishi’, the Chancellor chancer who gave us “Eat Out to Help Out” which, it now seems, helped to start a new wave of Covid-19, which means lots more dipping into the hat for more rules which most people won’t understand and which …

… the ‘covidiots’ will just ignore.

Disproportionate Diversity

Posted by Big John on October 13, 2020

Does this sound familiar ? .. I’m sure that it will if you watch TV and are a ‘soap’ fan, or enjoy ‘crime’ and ‘action’ series with story lines about the lives of cops, fire fighters, medics etc. where the main characters are nearly always married to someone from a different racial group, with one member of the family being gay and probably another being an elderly person with signs of dementia or a child with a physical handicap. Oh! .. and don’t forget the angst-ridden teenager.

They will have friends and work colleagues who are lesbian, transgender or have mental health problems, and of course the ‘new guy’ who just happens to be a ‘veteran’ with ‘PTSD’ or a young lady wearing a hijab.

If these characters are essential to the story-line that’s fine, but, to ‘sprinkle them about’ as what I call “diversity dressing” is just stupid and, I could be wrong, but I suspect, not too pleasing (if not insulting) to people in the groups depicted.

Ah! .. and guess what is likely to happen when you are watching one of these programmes ? .. Your enjoyment or otherwise will probably be interrupted by a commercial break featuring TV’s ubiquitous …

… “dual heritage” family !

Colonial codswallop !

Posted by Big John on October 7, 2020

As you may remember from some of my previous posts, I am a fan of historical TV drama series, and like to review both the good and the bad when it ‘takes my fancy’.

Unfortunately, my latest viewing falls into the second category. It’s title is “The Singapore Grip” (don’t ask !) and is based on JG Farrell’s 1978 novel, and the six-part drama follows a family of British ‘toffs’ living in Singapore at the time of the Japanese invasion of 1942.

So far I have only watched a couple of episodes, and it’s going to be a struggle to watch any more as I’m not sure how serious the story line is supposed to be, and there are so many mistakes in the depiction of the speech, behaviour and fashions of the time that I have given up counting.

To give a couple of examples, minor points but, I’m not sure what an American army officer is doing in Singapore at this time and why is he wearing the olive/brown US ‘winter uniform’ in tropical Singapore, and not the US Army’s light cotton khaki ‘summer uniform’ as seen in both the tropics and the USA ? .. and did the British Forces “top brass” really hide under the table when the first Japanese aircraft was spotted ?

I’ve not read it, but I understand that Farrell’s novel is an “anti-empire satire”. so far it’s more like a …

… Singapore ‘soap’ !

Another Panic Plan !

Posted by Big John on September 12, 2020

It’s hard to believe, but Barmy Boris and his mate Matt Han-cock-up have just come up with a way of increasing the Covid 19 infection rate !

They have introduced the ‘six person rule‘, but it doesn’t start until Monday! .. which means that every ‘covidiot’ in the country will be out and about this weekend attending every kind of party and piss-up imaginable, before the ‘hi-viz jobsworths’ start reporting them for being very, very, naughty boys and girls.

“Joined-up thinking” …

… Wos That then ?

The brats are back !

Posted by Big John on September 3, 2020

Yes ! .. Today the local school reopened after the ‘lockdown’ and the summer break and, once again, I could enjoy watch kids arriving by scooter, skateboard and bike, followed by parents who had never heard of ‘social distancing’ or face masks as they ambled along mesmerised by their smartphones: and, once again, for those arriving by car, it was hunt the parking space time and “sod the local residents!” as the little angels must be deposited as near to the school gates as possible.

A couple of weeks ago four (yes four!) men in hi-viz outfits and big boots took a very long time to erect this sign…

…. on a ten foot high pole opposite my house ! .. I wonder how long …

… it will remain upright ?

TV’s fledgling “legal eagle”.

Posted by Big John on August 17, 2020

I’ve just watched the final episode of the new “Perry Mason” TV series. Apart from some of the characters’ names being the same, it is nothing like the old ‘court room drama’ shows from more than 50 years ago, although I believe it is somewhat true to the first few books written by Earl Stanley Gardner.

However, I enjoyed this kind of “noir detective” tale of a hard drinking scruffy gumshoe in 1930’s Los Angeles. It reminded me of another great series “Boardwalk Empire” with it’s very ‘authentic look’ and ‘believable’ characters, with Matthew Rhys as good in this as he was in “The Americans”.

Oh ! .. before I forget .. According to this new series investigator Paul Drake used to be black and Della Street was a lesbian. I’m not sure what happened with Paul, but at least we know why in the old series …

… Della and Perry never became “an item”.

It only takes one !

Posted by Big John on August 13, 2020

I see that one of my favourite poets, Rudyard Kipling, is in the news again, because the BBC has decided that the musical version of his celebrated poem “Mandalay” is being removed from their showpiece programme commemorating the 75th anniversary of VJ Day, much to the distress of the WWII veterans’ organisation the Burma Star Association. This is because just one of the performers objected to the line ..“an wastin’ Christian kisses on an ’eathen idol’s foot”  .. as he felt .. “it derogatory to people of colour.” Quite how that works, is a little beyond my old brain’s understanding.

If you have not read Kipling’s poems, I should warn you that they do not fall into the category of ‘WOKE-PC’ , although “Fuzzy-Wuzzy” was written about the bravery and fighting skills of Sudanese tribesmen and his …

“Of all them blackfaced crew
The finest man I knew
Was our regimental bhisti, Gunga Din…

… Though I’ve belted you and flayed you,
By the livin’ Gawd that made you,
You’re a better man than I am, Gunga Din!”

… are extracts from a poem which may be complicated by the reality of imperialism and the overtones of racism. However, this soldier’s tribute to the Indian servant who saved his life is touching nonetheless.

“There is no sin so great as ignorance. Remember this.” … Rudyard Kipling

.. and this is progress ?

Posted by Big John on August 3, 2020

Just what we need at this traumatic time when a deadly pandemic sweeps across the world …

Yes ! You guessed right … 36 new members of the House of Lords, including Boris’s little brother and an ex-captain of the England cricket team.

Some clever-clogs has worked out that their combined annual expenses will cost the British tax-payer £1.1 million a year. Mind you this isn’t even a “drop in the ocean” when you consider the billions (we don’t have), being tossed around on such idiotic schemes as barmy Bojo’s “on yer bike” and Tricky Rishi’s half price pizza plan.

Never mind. The sun is still shining, the pubs are now open, your nails can be manicured, and if you have a mind to, you can have your bum tattooed before heading for the nearest beach to join all the other halfwits who seem completely oblivious to the fact that they risk far more than getting sunburned and finding some real sand in …

… their sandwiches.
