旅行好きとしていつも旅行してて思うのは基本的に非効率な行動だと感じています。住んでも居ない慣れない土地にお金を払って移動し、12時間も滞在しない一晩寝るためだけのために安くないお金を支出しそして体力的にも疲れて返ってくる。
一方で、その慣れない体験は今一度生活について考えさせてくれるのも事実であり、日頃見逃している夕焼けや朝焼けを見て感動したり、その地方の文化や芸能を見て地域文化を感じることなどは貴重な経験にも感じます。
旅の歴史をたどることは、人間とその取りまく環境を考えることでもある。移動することで、人間は新しい環境に置かれるからだ。 たとえば、それは見たこともない自然である。人間と自然の関係は、現代とはまったく異なっていた。後述するが、自然とは、かつては眺めて感受する対象ではなかった。不吉や恐怖の感情、辛い労働をもたらすもので、けっして楽しむべき「風景」ではなかった。 にもかかわらず、人間は太古の時代から見知らぬ土地に憧れて、未知なる空間に想いをはせてきたのだ。これゆえに、旅行の新しい目的が考え出され、旅行手段が発明されてきた。
旅行という事象の歴史を知りたいと思い、その変遷を見てみます。

古代
我々の祖先はアフリカからはるかなる旅をしながら全世界へと散らばっていきました。そこに農耕文化が根付き定住農耕集落が形成されていいきます。
有名な旅の一つにアレクサンドロス大王のギリシアからインドにいたる遠征があります。帰還途中に死去してしまうまでの10年ものあいだ遠征をしました。アレクサンドロスの遠征は美しいものではなく、バクトリアソグディア地方では2年にもわたり戦争を展開し男は虐殺、女と子どもは奴隷とします。ペルシア帝国に至るまでの都市において住民を虐殺していました。遠征は6万4000人に及び戦闘員は4万7000人、非戦闘員は1万6000人の編制でした。
アレクサンドロス大王と真逆の方向へ向かったのは三蔵法師です、中国からシルクロードを西へ移動していきました。大乗仏教の経典を取りに行くことが目的でもあり、彼の記した記録には観光名所も記述されていました。

中世
中世は聖職者、学生、商人、職人、芸人、ロマなど様々な身分の人が移動した時代でした。人々が移動することで生じた弊害にペストも目立ちます。 聖職者たちのヨーロッパ巡礼の旅行は比較的難しくなく、通行書や許可書、健康証明書や現金があれば可能でした。馬であれば1日60キロほど、徒歩であると1日25キロほどの移動。これらの人々に対しての詐欺や強盗、殺人なども少なくなかった時代です。
職人ではオイレンシュピーゲルは手工業の現場をめぐり、鍛冶屋、靴屋、織物屋、毛皮屋、ビール醸造、パン屋などを訪れました。貴族階級の詩人なども各地を回り、ヴァルターファンデアフォーゲル、オスヴァルトフォンヴォルケンシュタインなどが有名です。
この時代、冒険としての遠征も有名です。マルコポーロは商人として東方見聞録を著し、旅行記は多くの人に読まれました。メッカ巡礼を記したイブン・バットゥータ、ヴァイキングの北アメリカ大陸発見、コロンブスの旅などもあります。
近代
啓蒙主義の世紀であり、産業革命により移動手段が整備されてきた時代。 馬車での移動が主であった時代からロンドンやパリで市内交通機関が整備され鉄道が利用されるようになります。1825年に初の旅客鉄道が開通、1830年にリバプール〜マンチェスター間を結びました。1860年にはロンドンで地下鉄の工事が開始され1863年に開通。
15世紀ごろは馬車にスプリングが適用されサスペンション機能が組み込まれます。1782年ごろには郵便物を運ぶ馬車に人が乗ることができるようになり、ロンドンとブリストルの移動が便利になります。 18世紀の旅行では美しい風景を眺めることが流行になり、ピクチャレスクな旅といったものがウィリアムギルピンなどが提唱しました。
高等教育では今の修学旅行と類似するグランドツアーと呼ばれる仕組みができていきます。トマス・ホッブズやアダム・スミスはこういった貴族階級の子どもを連れてヨーロッパ各地を巡り、それぞれの土地の優れた学者などと交流していき思想などを築いていきました。多くあったものはイギリスからイタリアへツアーすることであり、名所旧跡の前で記念の肖像がを描いてもらうことがステータスでもありました。
そうするとイタリアでは舞踏会や芝居、オペラなどが発展していき、ナポリなどでは高級娼婦の町としても有名でした。
トマス・クックは近代ツーリズムの元祖であり、旅行を単純化し大衆化し低価格化しました。クーポンで鉄道、ホテルなど利用できるようになり現金もそれまでより少なく持ち歩くなどシステムかし、旅の費用を前払いにするなど作り出します。
学術的な意味での旅も増えていったのもこの時代です。フンボルトは中南米旅行を5年かけて巡り旅行記を34巻執筆します。これをまとめるのに20年要しました。
現代
現代になると旅行ガイドブックが整備されていき、ドイツ全土の町村をアルファベット順にインデックスし宿屋、建築物などの情報がまとめられた本など出版されます。ライン川くだりガイドなどもあり8日間、2週間パターンなどパッケージが紹介されます。ミシュランガイドなどの先駆けになりました。
19世紀にはガソリンエンジンの発明があり、自動車が移動手段として広まっていき、それだけでもなく船舶、飛行機、などの動力としても使用されいます。自動車の成り立ちはマイバッハ、ダイムラーにより1890年ごろ。ベンツもおおよそ同時期でした。同時期には自転車も普及し自転車旅行も広まりました。
長距離鉄道や豪華列車の発展もこの頃。ジョージ・プルマンは当時のスピードが遅く、夜間は運行しない鉄道の常識から寝台車のアイデアを得ます。1858年に施策を開始し1863年に寝台車「パイオニア号」を完成させました。
感想
人類の旅行史について古代から現代まで要点を見ていくことができる本でした。各時代ごとに人々が動き出す理由や流行を知ることができるのはとても興味深く、次第に大衆化されていき誰でも移動しやすい世界になったことも分かります。
中世ぐらいまでは本当に冒険であり、命だけの行為にも感じますが、近代に入ってからガイドブックが整理されていき、交通網も発展、ツアー文化も成熟されていくことで冒険から旅行といった響きに発展していきました。
聖地巡礼みたいな行為は本来の意味の通り巡礼が相当昔から行われており、実物を目で見るという行為は当時の写真や動画のない時代にとってはとても意味のあることだったのでしょう。つい50年ぐらい前まででもそんな感じがします。
綺麗に経済活動と結び付きながら移動手段やツアーシステムも生み出されていくのを知ると、世の中は求められていく方に動いていくものなのだなと思いました。
