      Sam looks around, trying to focus through the pain and the weakness, and when his eyes settle on the blood-stained machete, it all comes together in a sickening rush. “Vampires,” he says. “We were...” he trails off. “Oh, God...” and like a wound acknowledged, the aching in his stomach makes itself known as hunger, and Sam whimpers and turns onto his side.
