XML Publishing: new online training module added to EDCH Training

OpenEdition has expanded the training on offer on the EDCH Training platform by adding a new self-paced training module on XML publishing. Only available in English for the time being, it is for people involved in the publishing of scientific journals.

Why create a module on XML for scholarly publishing?

Modern scholarly publishing increasingly relies on formats such as XML and JSON for structuring content. However, many Diamond access journals are hampered as they struggle to acquire the right technical skills without access to proper training.

That’s where this new module comes in. First, it introduces XML as the key standard for exchanging data, displaying information and quality control – the three most common challenges in publishing workflows. It then brings this standard into a real-world publishing context, with the help of OJS (Open Journal Systems), one of the tools most frequently used by open access journals.

What you learn

By the end of this training module, you will know:

  • What XML is and why it is indispensable for publishing scholarly articles
  • How to structure articles in JATS format to optimize their discoverability
  • How to convert DOCX files using the JATS XML Converter Service
  • How to set up XML workflows using the OJS plugin

This training module does not cover the manual production or editing of XML files, schemas other than JATS (such as TEI or ONIX), the integration of XML on platforms other than OJS (e.g. Lodel, Janeway, etc.), or advanced validation or automation.

Free of charge, no previous knowledge required, self-paced

You don’t need to be familiar with XML: the training starts with the basics, uses short videos and provides a glossary for specialist terms. It is designed so you can adapt it to your schedule and needs: it lasts about 90 minutes and is very flexible – you are free to complete the module in one go, or pick and choose the different parts that interest you.

Free of charge and open to all, simply create an EDCH Training account to sign up for the module, follow your progress and pick up where you left off.

About EDCH Training

EDCH Training is an online training platform launched by OpenEdition as part of the European Diamond Capacity Hub (EDCH). It is dedicated to helping develop Diamond open access scholarly publishing skills. It offers training that is open to all in an effort to meet the needs of European publishing communities.

Designed as a collaborative platform, the idea is that anyone within the European publishing community can contribute and add to it. The XML Publishing module is the first concrete example of this: it was jointly created by the OpenEdition team and members of the CRAFT-OA project, paving the way for other future contributions and partnerships.
