I Am Legend Review
I watched I Am Legend recently. I can't decide whether or not I liked it.
I definitely liked a lot of parts of it. For one thing, Will Smith was one of my early crushes, and I still enjoy watching him. The first part of the movie was chock full of beautiful shots of empty, overgrown New York. I like the little glimpses we get of his struggle to survive alone. I like that the movie did not go for blockbuster action style (at least not for a while) or horror style. There were no sudden-jump-out scares, even when he finally ran into some zombies/hemocytes/whatever. Pretty much, I was into it until the dog died. And then it just got too silly. All in all, I might give it a 3.
Perhaps if the zombies had been people with makeup on rather than super-fake looking it wouldn't have broken the mood for me. The relentless hordes of bouncing zombies just weren't that interesting. Oh, there are other survivors, oh, he find a cure: boring. The alternate ending was a bit better (no cure, Will Smith just decides to go on a road trip with the woman), but the zombies happily cuddling each other was probably too silly to fly.
I had similar reactions to Robinson Cruse on Mars. Though Mars was basically a fantasy world with fireballs and glowing crystals, the first portion of the movie was very compelling. An astronaut crashes on Mars, has to find a way to live, and starts going a little crazy. AND THEN THE ALIENS SHOW UP. That's where it lost me.
I think I would enjoy a movie that actually was about the last/only person alive on a planet. I hear The Quite Earth might be that. On the other hand, I remember not much enjoying Castaway when it came out.
