The Ocean Breakthroughs are a set of five science-based sectoral tipping points that show how working with the ocean can cut emissions, build resilience, and secure a safer future for people and planet

WHAT ARE THE OCEAN BREAKTHROUGHS?

To meet the world’s climate and nature goals by 2050, we must unlock the power of the ocean. The Ocean Breakthroughs define five key tipping points for action by 2030 across marine conservation, food, energy, transport, and tourism. Each one is practical, achievable, and necessary to cut emissions, restore ecosystems, and build a just and sustainable future.

The Ocean Breakthroughs were developed in 2023 by members of the ocean community united under the Marrakech Partnership on Ocean & Coastal Zones, with the support of the UN High-Level Climate Champions.

A 2030 ROADMAP FOR A 2050 GOAL

The Ocean Breakthroughs contribute to cutting global emissions by up to 35% while helping achieve key international goals including the Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development Goals, and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Achieving them by 2030 means the ocean can continue to provide food, livelihoods, and climate stability for generations to come.
