My dissertation, entitled "The P&I Letters of Undertaking as a modern form of security for the re... more My dissertation, entitled "The P&I Letters of Undertaking as a modern form of security for the release of arrested ships" touched on a number of areas of the law and was a comparative examination and analysis of the civil procedures pertaining to the interim measure of ship arrest in common law and civil law countries, namely England, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, South Africa, New Zealand and the USA. The dissertation examined the legal extent of bank guarantees and the mechanism of judicial guarantees in many jurisdictions and researched the business and financial implications of ship arrest in terms of money, time and satisfaction for both shipowners and claimants. The topic was particularly interesting and challenging as there is no single universal approach and the bibliography is limited. I was therefore able to adopt an original line of argument on the basis of all the available sources and suggest amendments in the standard maritime contracts in order to promote the use and acceptance of P&I LOU.
