The present corpus study focused on two areas: whether or how the animacy of the subject phrase interacts with the "volitional" or "intentional" meaning attributed to epistemic "will" in both Inner-Circle and Singapore college students" essays (2) whether Singapore English students will be more likely than Inner-Circle English students to present with the "volitional" or "intentional" "will" due to substrate influence, lack of exposure to target language, or both. Although the results were not altogether conclusive (only a few tokens of interest were found), this study reveals interesting differences between the writing styles of the three groups studied.
