In terms of Formosan languages (a primary branch of Austronesian languages spoken on the island o... more In terms of Formosan languages (a primary branch of Austronesian languages spoken on the island of Taiwan), while issues like tense, aspect and mood (TAM) has been intensively discussed, the topic of 'modality' has not been explored in depth. • Being one of the few Formosan languages that have auxiliaries, the Seediq language (Atayalic) productively uses auxiliaries to express TAM and also modality. • At the same time, the author of this research has also been studying Toda Seediq, an under-studied dialect of the Seediq language, and this has led to the following research questions: a) What kinds of modal auxiliaries does Toda Seediq have (both morpho-syntactically and semantically)? b) Do Toda Seedia modal auxiliaries semantically function the same or similar to the modal expressions of other languages cross-linguistically?
