The aim of this study was to evaluate whether four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the promoter region of vasopressin V1a receptor gene (V1aR) could be used as genetic markers for divergent platelet aggregation response to AVP. Seventeen of 33 subjects showed more than 60% of maximum platelet aggregation and were classified as responders. Sixteen were classified as nonresponders because they had less than 30% aggregation. In a preliminary study, V1aR gene sequences were determined in two responders and two nonresponders. We found four SNPs in the promoter region of the V1aR gene:-6951G/A,-4112A/T,-3860T/C, and-242C/T. In all 33 subjects the genotypes of four SNPs were determined using either polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with allele-specific primers or PCR followed by restriction-fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). There were no differences in the AVP-induced aggregation between the subjects with and without variant alleles of each four SNPs. The genotype frequencies of four SNPs of V1aR were almost identical between AVP responders and nonresponders. These results suggest that the four SNPs in the promoter region of the V1aR gene may not be useful as genetic markers for platelet aggregation heterogeneity.

This study was aimed to determine whether Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) and Cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) derived essential oils (EOs) could be used to control Listeria monocytogenes in ground beef. When L. monocytogenes contaminated ground beef was exposed to 5% and 10% of crude and commercial clove EOs or 2.5% and 5.0% of crude and commercial cinnamon EOs and stored at refrigeration (8 C), chilling (0 C) temperatures for 7 days as well as at freezing (À18 C) temperatures for 60 days, it was found that 10% clove (both crude and commercial) could completely inactivate L. monocytogenes in ground beef within 3 days of post inoculation, irrespective of storage temperature. However, 5.0% clove EOs (both crude and commercial) was not found effective in killing L. monocytogenes throughout the storage period. On the other hand, both 2.5% and 5.0% of crude and cinnamon EOs was not found effective in inactivating L. monocytogenes throughout the storage period. However, 5.0% commercial cinnamon EOs was able to reduce 3.5e4.0 log CFU/g of L. monocytogenes populations depending on the storage temperature and time. The 3.5e4.0 log CFU/g reduction of L. monocytogenes was achieved within 7 days at refrigeration and chilling temperatures but it takes 60 days while storage at freezing temperature. This finding suggested that the effectiveness of reducing L. monocytogenes populations in ground beef by chinamon EOs was influenced by storage temperature and time. On the other hand, this influence was not observed in clove EOs indicating that use of clove EOs is better in killing pathogen populations in ground beef, than that of cinnamon EOs. Hence, could be useful in controlling L. monocytogenes in ground beef meat and improve the safety of ground beef products.

Medical screening of 43,213 Bangladeshi job seekers (M/F: 42,290/923) was carried out in our reference center during the period August, 1994 to May, 1996. Albeit male predominance, they represented middle and lower middle socio-economic class of the population from all over the country. All were young adults (age: 27.05+/-3.56 years; mean+/-SD) applying for job visas to different Asian countries. Physical examination and laboratory investigations including markers for several infectious diseases and drugs of abuse were carried out as required by countries recruiting the workers. Serological tests revealed that 1,884 (4.4%) of individuals were positive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), 737 (1.7%) for Treponema pallidum hemagglutination (TPHA) and only 83 (0.2%) for antibody to human immunodeficiency virus (anti-HIV). However, we could not confirm any case of infection with HI...

Thirtysix patients had sustained response, which was significantly correlated to liver cirrhosis, pretreatment serum HCV RNA levels and HCV genotype lb with odds ratio (95% C.I.) of 0.140 (0.022-0.874), 0.230 (0.100-0.529) and 0.259 (0.085-0.788), respectively. The frequency of HLA-A11,-B51 and-DR15 was significantly higher (p = 0.023, 0.008 and 0.022; odds ratio = 2.743, 12.6 and 2.8, respectively), while the frequency of HLA-A24 was significantly lower (p = 0.038, odds ratio = 0.33) in the sustained responders. After correcting for the number of alleles tested, the differences were no longer apparent. (Pc = 0.276, 0.168, 0.264 and 0.456, respectively). After adjusted by liver cirrhosis, pretreatment serum HCV RNA levels and HCV genotype, HLA-All,-A24,-B51,-C15 and-DR15 remained the significant alleles associated with sustained response with odds ratio of 2.

In this study, computational approaches were performed to reveal the effect of nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (nsSNPs) in Bcl-2 gene. A total of 79 nsSNPs were studied. Amongst all, 11 nsSNPs (M166T, G141E, R129C, S105P, F104S, R98L, L97P, H94P, V93A, G27S, V15L) were located at highly conserved region or functionally important domains with a high probability of being deleterious for Bcl-2 structure or role. Except for H94P, rest of the high-risk nsSNPs displayed decreased stability of BcL-2 structure. However, F104S attracted significant attention because it exhibited considerably reduced binding affinity than wild type Bcl-2 protein against HA 14-1 antagonist. This extensive computational experiment will assist as a valuable data source for upcoming populationbased studies.

The existing bidding strategies for a wind energy supplier faces limitations with respect to the potential cooperation, other competitors’ bidding behavior, network loss, and uncertainty of wind production (WP) and balancing market price (BMP). Hence, to solve these problems, a novel bidding strategy (BS) for a wind power supplier as a price-maker has been proposed in this paper. The new algorithm, called the evolutionary game approach (EGA) inspired hybrid particle swarm optimization and improved firefly algorithm (HPSOIFA), has been proposed to handle the bidding issue. The bidding behavior of power suppliers, including conventional power suppliers, has been encoded as one species to obtain the equilibrium where the EGA can explore ...

This interest is fueled by the integration of a high amount of intermittent renewable energy resources (RES) in the networks. This study has been performed to analyze and identify the potential of DSM in providing the operational flexibility of power networks in 8 SouthEast European countries. For that purpose, a survey questionnaire was developed on DSM, which was distributed in late 2017 and responses were collected in January 2018. The questionnaire collected information on existing DSM capacities, the required DSM amount for flexible operation and the future DSM potential in the region. Additional key information was collected about the DSM provision, such as the characteristics, location and network services obtained from these resources, as well as the influential market participants to provide these DSM services in the network. This study will facilitate the cross-border management of RES by increasing the operational flexibility of the transmission network in SouthEast Europe.

Computer-aided screening tools with greater sensitivity is imperative for disease diagnosis and prognosis as early as possible. It also can be a helpful tool in triage for testing and clinical supervision of COVID-19 patients. However, designing such an automated tool from non-invasive radiographic images is challenging as many manually annotated datasets are not publicly available yet, which is the essential core requirement of supervised learning schemes. This article proposes a 3D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based classification approach considering both the inter-and intra-slice spatial voxel information. The proposed system is trained in an end-to-end manner on the 3D patches from the whole volumetric CT images to enlarge the number of training samples, performing the ablation studies on patch size determination. We integrate progressive resizing, segmentation, augmentations, and class-rebalancing to our 3D network. The segmentation is a critical prerequisite step for COVID-19 diagnosis enabling the classifier to learn prominent lung features while excluding the outer lung regions of the CT scans. We evaluate all the extensive experiments on a publicly available dataset, named MosMed, having binary-and multi-class chest CT image partitions. Our experimental results are very encouraging, yielding areas under the ROC curve of 0.914 ± 0.049 and 0.893 ± 0.035 for the binary-and multi-class tasks, respectively, applying 5-fold cross-validations. Our method's promising results delegate it as a favorable 1

It is illustrated by analyzing the impacts of system load attributes on the small-disturbance rotor angle stability of a power system. The load attributes contributing to the oscillatory modes can be considered as inherent uncertain variables within power systems and include load power variations, load composition, and load model parameters. Uncertainty in the renewable power generation is also incorporated in the probabilistic modelling and risk assessment to demonstrate the flexibility of the approach. A novel approach is proposed to select the severity functions to logically represent small-disturbance security margin. The risk profile of a power system has been presented considering the probability density functions (pdfs) of power system critical modal damping and a selected set of severity functions. The analysis techniques developed are illustrated with a modified version of the 68-bus NETS-NYPS power system with a high amount of renewable power penetration. The relative importance of the load attributes and the impact of these attributes on stability boundaries has been identified at varying risk levels with respect to their contribution to small-disturbance stability.

Debate stance classification, the task of classifying an author's stance in a two-sided debate, i... more Debate stance classification, the task of classifying an author's stance in a two-sided debate, is a relatively new and challenging problem in opinion mining. One of its challenges stems from the fact that it is not uncommon to find words and phrases in a debate post that are indicative of the opposing stance, owing to the frequent need for an author to restate other people's opinions so that she can refer to and contrast with them when establishing her own arguments. We propose a machine learning approach to debate stance classification that leverages two types of rich linguistic knowledge, one exploiting contextual information and the other involving the determination of the author's stances on topics. Experimental results on debate posts involving two popular debate domains demonstrate the effectiveness of our two types of linguistic knowledge when they are combined in an integer linear programming framework.
