Of the total number of respondents, the share of men is 54.7%, and the share of women is 45.3%. Considering the age structure of the respondents, the largest share of visitors is under 25 years old (21.3%), followed by 25-34 years old (19.7%) and between 35-44 years old (19.0%), while the smallest share of participants is over 65 years old.

Satisfaction with sustainability measures related to the protection of nature and animals was expressed by the participants in the highest percentage as extremely satisfied (42.5%), with an increase compared to 2024 (39.5%). At the same time, the share of respondents who were completely dissatisfied decreased, from 6.9% to 4.8%. This is certainly confirmation of the good direction of preserving the natural values ​​of the national park, which is also recognized by visitors.

In the survey results, no significant differences were observed between 2024 and 2025 in the shares of extremely satisfied visitors with the sustainability measures of drinking water and energy consumption, the presence of local products, and human health and safety, and all three measures are characterized by a decrease in the share of completely dissatisfied visitors.

A slight increase in the share of extremely satisfied visitors with measures for waste disposal and/or separation, and a decrease in the share of completely dissatisfied visitors, was observed for 2025 compared to 2024.

A slight decrease in the share of respondents who are extremely satisfied with the sustainability measure of using biodegradable packaging was observed for 2025 compared to 2024, however, the share of those who are satisfied and neutral increased. Visitors recognized this measure of sustainability and the share of respondents who are completely dissatisfied decreased in 2025.

Last year, visitors recognized and expressed their satisfaction with getting to know local traditions (dance, song, customs) as exceptional, and the share increased from 15.5% to 17.2%.

Surveys are still active in our visitor system and we certainly encourage our visitors to complete them because these satisfaction analyses help improve and work on increasing the quality of visiting our most beautiful national park.

Which tour programme should you choose?

If you are planning to visit this fairytale park, it is important to know which tour programs you can choose in order to make the most of the time spent here. There are eight tour programs in the Park, which means that there is a suitable program for each visitor. Visitors entering the Park at Entrance 1 are given a choice of four tour programs marked in green on the information boards. Entrance 2 serves as the starting point for four programs marked in orange. The tours are available in various durations, ranging from a few hours to full-day trips, giving visitors the opportunity to choose the option that best suits their wishes.

Programs A, B, and F lead you on an exploration of the Lower Lakes of the National Park. The tour begins at Entrance 1 or Entrance 2 and then follows marked trails leading to beautiful waterfalls, bridges, and viewpoints along the Lower Lakes. These programs are suitable for visitors with limited time or those who prefer an easier walk. Program E includes a short boat ride across Lake Kozjak, followed by a walk upstream to Lake Prošćansko. The panoramic train takes you back to the starting point. Sections with temporary traffic regulation:

• D429: from the county border (Korana Bridge) to the settlement Selište Drežničko (D42); and
• D42: from the village of Poljanak to the villages Selište Drežničko and Grabovac.

This year’s 41th Plitvice Marathon will take place on June 6th and 7th and this year runners may choose between a 5K (Plitvička petica) race, Wannabe 10 (9 kilometres) a half-marathon (21 kilometres), and a marathon (42 kilometres). The Plitvice Marathon is the oldest, greenest and most beautiful race in Croatia with more and more runners joining every year.

The Plitvice Marathon is one of the most popular races in Croatia, offering competitors the opportunity to run just above the Big Waterfall and alongside crystal-clear lakes. Because of their extraordinary natural beauty, these lakes have always attracted nature lovers. This year we will celebrate 77 years since Plitvice Lakes were declared a national park and 47 years since they were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

As before, this year’s Plitvice Marathon will be a part of the competition calendar of the First Croatian Road League, in cooperation with the Croatian Athletics Federation.

The number of competitors is limited to 2000 : 500 at the half-marathon, which will be held to commemorate the late Valentina Valjak, winner of the 35th Plitvice Marathon, 500 at the marathon, 500 at the Wannabe 10 and 500 at the 5K race. Every competitor will receive a starting package which includes a ticket to the National Park.

Running through the largest and the oldest national park in Croatia is a special experience, both physically and spiritually, so get your running shoes ready and join us at this spectacular sports event. European Day of Parks is a celebration of all Protected Areas, held on 24 May each year. The initiative was launched by the Europarc Federation in 1999 to mark the centenary of the declaration of the first National Parks in Europe (in Sweden). The aim of the celebrations is to bring people closer to nature and to raise public awareness of the importance of the natural and cultural treasures preserved in Protected Areas, and above all, the importance of conserving and sustainably managing these areas.

Connected by Nature

This year’s theme, “Connected by Nature”, highlights the importance of ecological connectivity. Every day we move – we travel to work, cross bridges, drive through tunnels, and follow roads that connect us to food, family, and adventure. Our world is built on connection, and we depend on it. Imagine if those connections disappeared! For wildlife across Europe, this is not imagination but reality: forests are divided by roads, rivers are cut by dams, meadows are replaced by concrete, and what was once a living network of habitats has become a mosaic of isolated fragments. Animals searching for food, shelter, or mates often encounter obstacles instead of pathways, plants struggle to spread, and ecosystems become weaker.

This is where Protected Areas make a difference.

These spaces play an essential role in conserving and restoring nature. Creating natural corridors is a key part of this work. Protected Areas across Europe are involved in large-scale projects that strengthen ecological connectivity and thus enhance nature’s resilience to pressures and change. By restoring rivers, reconnecting forests, creating wildlife corridors, and working across borders, Protected Areas help reconnect landscapes. They transform isolated areas back into living networks. That is exactly what we are celebrating this European Day of Parks.

Junior Rangers Programme

For us at the Plitvice Lakes National Park Conservation Service, the ideal way to celebrate this year’s theme of the European Day of Parks is to implement the Junior Rangers Programme. We have been running it since 2014 with 8th grade students from local elementary schools because we are connected to them by nature. We live, learn, and work together in a Protected Area or its immediate vicinity.

Therefore, every year, on the occasion of the European Day of Parks, we invite them to get to know the Park better and participate in our daily work of protecting and conserving the natural values we have. This year, for the first time, we organised the programme over two days because we had a record 58 participants from elementary schools in Korenica, Plitvička Jezera, Rakovica, and Cetingrad. From the first year of implementation until today, we have been guided by the desire and hope that in this way we will further raise awareness among young people of the importance of Protected Areas and, in the future, gain new young forces in nature protection.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is joining the global campaign to mark World Fish Migration Day under this year’s slogan, “We Are River People“. This event is celebrated every two years in May to raise awareness of the ecological importance of migratory fish species and the preservation of the river ecosystems on which they depend. Migratory fish species are those whose individuals or entire groups migrate to exploit resources such as habitat or food, most often migrating to spawn. According to IUCN data, as many as a third of freshwater fish species worldwide are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss, river fragmentation or barriers on watercourses, water pollution, and climate change. Marking World Fish Migration Day helps to launch global actions to restore river connectivity and protect these key species before it is too late.

Danube Trout and the Bijela Rijeka stream

In response to these challenges, our Park proudly recalls the first removal of artificial barriers on a watercourse in the Republic of Croatia, which was carried out last year on our Bijela Rijeka stream. The main role in this story is played by our native migratory species, the Danube Trout (Salmo labrax), which until a few years ago was almost on the verge of extinction (Figure 1). The Danube Trout migrates to the upstream parts of the watercourse to spawn, and on the Bijela Rijeka stream this vital journey was prevented by artificial barriers, remnants from the past when people used this watercourse for their own needs. To preserve its populations, five years ago we launched a complex, pioneering conservation project that includes the removal of invasive fish species, the restoration of the Danube Trout population through stocking, and the removal of artificial barriers on the Bijela Rijeka stream (Figure 2).

A year after the removal of the barriers, we received confirmation of success and a reward for all our hard work – through monitoring, we confirmed the return of the Danube Trout to the restored streams, where it had not been recorded for almost a hundred years (Figure 3). Although we have removed the barriers on the Bijela Rijeka stream, our work to restore the population of this migratory species is not yet complete. We continue to remove invasive species and restock, and we plan to restore free flows to other watercourses in the Park area.
