Kelly Macias received her Ph.D. from the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution at Nova Southeastern University. Her dissertation research entitled "Tweeting Away Our Blues: An Interpretative Phenomenological Approach to Exploring Black Women's Use of Social Media to Combat Misogynoir" focuses on how Black women in the US and Britain use social media for storytelling and testimony about their lives as Black women. Kelly has presented her work at international and national conferences including the Conference on African American Culture and Experience in Greensboro, North Carolina, the National Association of Ethnic Studies Conference in Starkville, Mississippi and the Testimony: Memory, Trauma, Engagement, Truth Conference in Oxford, United Kingdom.

"Sisters in the Collective Struggle": Sounds of Silence and Reflections on the Unspoken Assault on Black Females in Modern America

As the conversation on the state of modern Black America deepens in the wake of the Trayvon Marti... more As the conversation on the state of modern Black America deepens in the wake of the Trayvon Martin tragedy and increased violence affecting young Black males, acknowledging historical and present structures that serve to disenfranchise the Black community remain largely focused on boys and men. Yet, to fully examine the impact of White supremacy, patriarchy, and violence on Black lives, it is necessary to remove the culture of silence that permeates the discussion of how oppression is experienced by Black females. In this article, I explore the ways in which society encourages misogynoir (anti-Black misogyny) by reinforcing the marginalization of Black females and their status as the keepers of Black life. A dialogue about Black life, which does not speak to the troubles of Black women, is incomplete. Giving voice to their struggles, in the context of discussing the collective Black experience, is a part of the larger fight for peace, justice, and equality.

Enhancing the Experience: A Multiple Case Study of Students' Experiences Using Arts- Based Techniques in Learning Qualitative Research

This paper represents the third in a series of reports published in TQR in which authors explore ... more This paper represents the third in a series of reports published in TQR in which authors explore students' experiences learning to conduct qualitative research. Prior researchers have suggested that emotional and experiential elements of the learning experience are key for students learning to conduct qualitative research; the use of arts-based approaches may help address these priorities. We gave students in a conflict analysis and resolution degree program opportunities to conduct qualitative research using either an artsbased or traditional approach to analysis. We identified several ways that arts enhanced the learning experience for students, and discuss considerations for instructors or others who would like to incorporate an arts-based element into research instruction.

Most public spaces offer little opportunity for storytelling related to memory and trauma based o... more Most public spaces offer little opportunity for storytelling related to memory and trauma based on the effects of slavery and segregation for Black persons in the Western world. Moreover, chances for Black women to publicly explore the impact of oppression and marginalization due to their race and gender are all but non-existent. Black women have been wholly impacted by a brutal history of physical, mental and structural violence in the Global North, yet there is little scholarship that explores how and where they tell their stories and how survivor groups promote healing and recovery.
