I’ve never seen myself as an athlete. I started running when I lost a bet to a cross-country coach in high school. That year I finished a 5k race in 21 minutes – 12 minutes faster than my first-ever race. Before that season I couldn’t run a mile without having to walk.
To celebrate my 30th birthday, I decided to run my first marathon. When I was 35 I trained for my first triathlon. 6 marathons and a half Ironman later, I think it’s safe to say I’m an athlete. Though, I still feel like I’m a fake most days.
I’ve always dreamed of racing Boston, and my hope is that one of these days I’ll get there (though I may be in my 50s). Until then (and probably after), this is my journey.
Update: I finally BQed November 14, 2015 at the Richmond Marathon with a time of 3:37:54. TBD if it’s enough to actually get in the race, but I’m one step closer!
I signed up for my first full Ironman race in Lake Placid, so most of my 2016 posts will chronicle my training journey.
When I’m not [dreading] swimming, biking, and running, you can find me skiing, hiking, or wandering around DC with my dog, Atlas.
If you want to join me for a run sometime, drop me a note at mgh [at] kalabird.com
