I am a Ph.D Student in the Technology and Social Behavior program at Northwestern University, which is a joint degree in Computer Science and Communications. I currently work with Professor Noshir Contractor and at SONIC Lab.

Also, I am a software engineer, and an Adjunt Assistant Professor at the School of Communications and at the Department of Computer Science, both at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC). I have given lecture courses on web technologies to engineering, journalism and literature students. Additionally, I have been a part of research projects on visualization and social media network analysis and developing solutions in communications areas.

My research interests are Social Networks Analysis, Visualization, Web development, and Computational Journalism.

News articles often use narrative frames to present people, organizations, and facts. These narra... more News articles often use narrative frames to present people, organizations, and facts. These narrative frames follow cultural archetypes, enabling readers to associate each of the presented elements with familiar stereotypes, well-known characters, and recognizable outcomes. In this way, authors can cast real people or organizations as heroes, villains, or victims. We present a system that identifies the main entities of a news article, and determines which is being cast as a hero, a villain, or a victim. As currently implemented, this system interacts directly with news consumers through a browser extension. Our hope is that by informing readers when an entity is cast in one of these roles, we can make implicit bias explicit, and thereby assist readers in applying their media literacy skills. This approach can also be used to identify roles in well-understood event sequences in a more prosaic manner, e.g., for information extraction.

Work Key News: a web platform to support journalistic processes and editorial meetings

There are varied needs in newsrooms, driven by the availability for multiple sources of informati... more There are varied needs in newsrooms, driven by the availability for multiple sources of information, the demand for instant access of news, and the diverse possible frames for covering a given news event. Journalists would benefit from tools that help them to track their work and have more feedback from their editors and collaborators. To assist journal-istic work, we developed Work Key News: a web-based tool that allows reporters to work collaboratively according to the decisions made in the editorial meeting. Based on a news creation model and social media resources, it covers the main reporting tasks, such as proposition, decision, execution , and evaluation of stories. Prototype testing with media collaborators and workshops showed that this web platform eases the sharing of information of their stories, establish key process and relevance indicators for their work, and common criteria between editors, reporters, and media's stakeholders.
