Local regeneration and community wealth building–place making: co-operatives as agents of change

Purpose: This article provides an introduction to how worker cooperatives and other organisations... more Purpose: This article provides an introduction to how worker cooperatives and other organisations based on principles of participatory economy have been adopted in a range of international contexts as a vehicle for transforming places with strong aspiration to address location-specific social challenges. Design/methodology/approach: Through a presentation of four narrative cases the article exemplifies international experiences of cooperative approaches to place making. It critically reflects on the philosophical and strategic underpinnings of the projects implemented in Rochdale, Preston, Bologna, Rome and Cincinnati. Findings: The practical experiences of a number of local projects of place making involving cooperatives are conceptualised. The research has identified the importance of institutional, organisational and legal constraints for transformative cooperative-based place making initiatives. It shows a strong relevance of the place's historic legacy and communal governance for the choice of place making approaches. Practical and social implications: The paper highlights cases that incorporate place making practices involving cooperative organisation and municipal participation and considers their transferability potential. Originality/value: The article advances an important conversation relevant to researchers, educators, co-operators, politicians and local officials on diverse contemporary approaches in towns and cities that seek to reshape and regenerate local socioeconomic fabric by engaging tradition, principles and organisation models developed within the cooperative movement.

Challenges in a Social Enterprise from the Case of a Social Enterprise in Slovenia

There are a growing number of studies exploring the capacity building and business aspects of soc... more There are a growing number of studies exploring the capacity building and business aspects of social enterprise in an attempt to increase the understanding of business sustainability and resilience in the social economy. However, little is known about how social enterprises or social entrepreneurs emerging from notfor-profit sectors have faced challenges. In this study, we focus on a hospitality social enterprise founded by NGO workers in Slovenia as a single case study. We investigated challenges that a social entrepreneur and her team faced when pursuing sustainable social business. We uncovered several challenges at different levels, which existing studies have neglected. We found two organisational level challenges, such as managing the dual purpose of a social enterprise and absence of a business strategy, and two HRM level challenges, such as people management and leadership issue. This study can pave a path for future studies to focus on various challenges and even some resolutions.

This special issue of the International Journal of HRD Practice, Policy and Research brings toget... more This special issue of the International Journal of HRD Practice, Policy and Research brings together on-going work from the Global Entrepreneurial Talent Management3 (GETM3) project. GETM3 is a European Union Research Innovation and Staff Exchange (RISE) project investigating the HRD implications of the way existing and future talent can be managed at work, harnessing the entrepreneurial attitudes and skills of young people. The project is both interdisciplinary and international, exploring the key challenges of managing this entrepreneurial talent within organizations. The scope and content of the project align neatly with the intent of the Journal of International Journal of HRD Practice, Policy and Research, not least the emphasis on practical HRD implications. Human Resource Management Challenges in a Slovenian Social Enterprise: A Case Study

There is a growing number of studies exploring social enterprise in order to increase the underst... more There is a growing number of studies exploring social enterprise in order to increase the understanding of business sustainability and resilience in the social economy. However, little is known about how social enterprises or social entrepreneurs emerging from not-for-profit sectors have faced human resource management (HRM) challenges in practice. In this study, we focus on a hospitality social enterprise founded by social workers in Slovenia as a single case study. Through a series of combined interview and observation methods, we investigate the HRM challenges this social entrepreneur faced when pursuing sustainable social business. We uncovered four strategic and HRM challenges that contribute to the existing body of knowledge in the social enterprise literature. This study paves the way for future studies to focus on HRM in social enterprise.
